Toyota 2wd transmission q's

So my little rusty '79 Toyota 2wd commuter truck is having a growling transmission, especially 1st gear. So I'm thinking of looking around Pull a Part for a used one, but how many different transmissions are there?

Truck is a '79 SR5 long bed with a 20R and a 5-speed. Isn't there a tag that I can look up the tranny? What other year trucks can I look to swap one out of?

Chances are you have an W52 which is a weak pile of cast iron scrap metal at best. Any 5 speed from a later year will swap in pretty easily with only a minor modification to the tab on the crossmember for the trans mount. The driveline, hole for the shifter in the floor etc will all line right back up. If you want a better overdrive find a W58 from a cresida/supra from the early 80's and put a bellhousing from a W or G series truck trans on it and enjoy. I have one set up ready to go into my new truck that I had in my old 78 and it was tits.
