Vehicle (Excise) Tax renewal

Hardline Crawlers - Rock Bouncer Builds, Tech & Off-Road Trail Talk

Help Support Hardline Crawlers:

The tabs for my rigs have gone up every year in some way since the $30 thing went into effect... They just nail nonsensicle "fees" onto it anyway. This year, my car is $64! For what? My girlfriends car was $115 last year. She is afraid of what it is going to be this year. My truck went from, say $35 last year, to $45 this year. For what?

it's because of the SAS, you're a greater risk to other drivers now that you did modifications to the structural integrity of the vehicle, that were not to spec for the original year/make/model.

for example if you were to put a '91 xj d-line on a '92 that would ruin the integrity of the trail ride

I'm going to speak up a bit and point out a few items that I think some of you may be forgetting.

1) we live in a state with NO income tax - one of very few I will add
2) the car-tab tax was the ONLY progressive (more you make, more you pay) tax that we had in this state: i.e. if you wanted to drive a $100,000 Mercedes you paid way more than someone with a $25,000 Pickup truck.
3) we have insanely high gas tax trying to backfill what we've lost since the repeal of the car-tab tax
4) we need to replace a huge number of major infrastructure items SOON
5) we need to build new infrastructure (Light Rail) if we're to remain a competitive Port, and a State whose economy can grow and expand in the next 10 to 20 years.

:stirpot:

Are you old enough and have lived here long enough to remember the old Motor Vehicle Excise Tax? It was HUGE, like ENORMOUSLY HUGE. I was personally paying $600 for a single vehicle 13 years ago. Where did all of THAT money go? We should have roads paved with gold from all of the money the state received from that tax. So what happened? And it's not like our infrastructure has fallen into sudden disrepair in the relatively short amount of time since the MVET was done away with by voters.

The purchaser of the $100,000 Mercedes has already paid 4 times as much in sales tax (roughly an additional $6,700) as has the purchaser of the $25,000 pickup truck? That is not "progressive" enough for you? :wtf:

Not only that, but being larger and heavier, the pickup truck causes more wear to the road system than does the Mercedes. But the Mercedes owner should be expected to pay more? :wtf:

Maybe we should have a new resident tax. Everyone moving here is assessed $50,000 to cover the expenses of expanding roads, schools, water, sewers and eveything else to accomodate their azzes.

That or just accept the fact that no matter how much money we thow at infrastructure, the area is experiencing unsustainable growth that we will never be able to keep up with. Just let things deteriorate to the point that people would rather live somewhere else.

Answer: Yes ;) I'm 39 and I was born here, lived here all my life.

I remember when we had painful car-tab taxes. I'm still coming down on the side that says we don't have a consistent system of taxes that shares the load proportionally across income ranges: Expensive taxes on tabs is one way to do that in a state with no income tax.

But is basing it upon the value of the car the way to do it?

Generally: yes - if we're not willing to go full-bore on progressive scale Income Taxes - and don't get me wrong, I'm no tax and spend Democrat, I'm a pretty hardcore Republican - then we have to do something else.

High gas taxes disproportionally effect lower-income individuals because they frequently can't afford to live where public transit serves. Thus - taxing the guy or gal who wants to drive their affluence is reasonably logical.

**** that, because a person makes more they should pay more for the roads? That is bull****

How about these arrogant ****ing bikers, they should be charged to use the road, and charged for a lic, and an asshole tax. Share the road, screw them, I will however share my bumper.

That's how progressive taxation works, this is the designed behavior of the scale.:redneck:

You do not have to make alot of money to drive what is seen as an expensive car. Maybe the tax should be less for those who lease an expensive car as the $ spent for that car will be far less that if it had been purchased outright. oh and just because I have not said it yet.......**** METRO:mad:

I'm sure he understands that's how progressive taxation works... but you'll be hard pressed to find folks on this board that support progressive taxation. :D

I'm still not convinced that an increased tax based upon the value of a vehicle is itself a better solution than one based upon use.

A person who "wants to drive their affluence" is already taxed progressively by the sales tax they paid when they bought the vehicle. I'm certainly not advocating the collection of funds for transportation solely from a usage-based system, but I think a registration fee based upon a flat rate + weight adjustments in conjunction with a fuel tax then based upon usage is a very sensible way to go about it.

<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->Wow... and I'm the guy that usually gets labeled as a socialist!

Weird... :D

We live in a welfair state. Period. Pregnant girls move here from other states cause WA will pay for you to have a baby....sometimes they move back after the birth, sometimes they stay and milk the system for all it's worth....And the system is worth alot. Our $30 car tabs have never really been $30. They always tag something back on....It gets progressively worse year after year. I personally am tired of the government not listening to what the people want. How many times have we voted "no" on something and the state did it anyway? Stadiums ring a bell? "Hey...let's knock down the kingdome than we just spent millions of dollars renovating a few years ago and build new stadiums cause our spoiled ass teams want better." Now that the hawks and Mariners have new stadiums guess who wants better. Sonics.....Didn't we renovate Key arena not all that long ago? I personally am sick and tired of the wasted money and the government not listening to the people.....Until I see some accountability for money spent and some officials with new hearing aids(paid for by us of course) I will continue to vote no to all their silly shenanigans and political maneuvering to get us out of our cars and into mass transit.....The latest light rail debacle should be proof enough for anyone that thinks WA state spends money wisely and listens to what the people want. How many billions did we spend for what? Nothing!!!!

Agreed.

It's simple, and it does a fair job of reflecting the actual wear and tear the vehicle does.

It also places the burden of choice on the citizen. If a guy wants to drive an 8000 lbs rig 25,000 miles a year, that's his choice, but he'll have to pay a tax that somewhat offsets the wear and tear he does to the roads. If he doesn't like the idea of paying that much, he has the choice to drive less, drive a lighter vehicle, or both.

You don't really think $30/year is reasonable, do you?

That legislation was fun and satisfying in a kick-the-man-in-the-nuts sort of a way, but the dollar amount was ridiculous, and there was (I believe) no plan included to make the rate match inflation.

Exactly they spent money in researching something that they new the people did not want in the first place. Billions of tax dollars to do nothing. **** all they had to do was go to the Bay Area and ask those guys how does B.A.R.T work for you. Or go anywhere where there is light rail. Those asshats did not do a damn thing but collect a fat check.

You don't really think $30/year is reasonable, do you?

That's not really the point.....Government for the people, of the people, by the people.

The point was that our elected officials don't listen to what the people want.....instead most follow their own agenda.

For the record, I would pay more probably, but not much more....When the $30 tabs went into effect, all of my vehicles went up also. I voted for it knowing full well that they would go up.

I see a few people throwing it out that we have no State income tax. Yer comparing apples to oranges.. OR vs. WA. Yeah, we have no income tax, but we have sales tax that up until a few years ago was not deductible from your federal taxes like OR's income tax is. And for many years we had outrageous taxes on our vehicles on top of the huge gas taxes (they aren't new since the $30 tabs). Back then the people that bought wildly expensive motorhomes figured out it was cheaper to just get trip permits than it was to license their rigs.... I paid $1100.00 in taxes when I bought my used 97 F-350 and licensed it in WA. a year ago. Why should I have to pay that every year? Things are outta hand in this state......

Anybody registered there truck lately?
I got to pay: $30 for tab, $15 service fees + gross weight fees for a total of about $110.
If I remember right they also charged me extra for the Blazer on weight.

Progessive taxes are a joke and only used to promote class warfare.

I just tonight renewed my 06 3500 CTD for $80, my cruiser for $43, my trailer for $33.75, a few months ago my 04 Tacoma for $51, and back in Feb my wheeling rig for something around $40. My other little trailer will be coming up for ~$30 in a few months. And I just confirmed that I no longer have to deal with emissions.

What are these taxes you guys are complaining about again? :evilfinger: :kissmyass:

Complete BS. At work the head honcho drives an old Geo Metro, and he is pulling in 6-7 figures. Just because they have money doesn't mean they give a fawk about what they drive.

Time for toll roads, everyone who uses the roads need to pay up. I ride the bus every day to work and it's no picnic, but it gets me there. I know of some people who are struggling to make ends meet yet insist on driving in just for the convenience of having the car near by. Fawk that, make them pay a toll too. :fawkdancesmiley:

How about those of us who drive in because there is no reasonable connection between bus lines? :kissmyass:

I'll be looking for a new job on the eastside if/when 520 gets a toll on it again.

You must not live in king county since it doesn't look like your payinig any of the RTA taxes. I have 4 vehicles and my registration ranges from $120 for the 67 beater truck to $400 for the motorhome. If they pass this tax it will cost me about $ 2.00 a mile just to pay for the tax, the few times I take the motorhome out in the summer.

If we must rasie money for roads, then I say toll roads so you only have to pay for what you use...

I'm in King, it's determined by the city not county. When I was living in the Seattle area I paid over a grand into the monoderail "prodject" over two years on my Tacoma.

Hey, I drive to a park & ride and take the bus from there. You can too. There's a bus that goes from Issaquah Highlands PR all the way to the U, it's the 556. There may be others at other PR's.

Full route map
UW area route map
Schedule (about 45 minutes, yeah - that part sucks)

Being at the U gives you more options than the typical person who's not in Downtown Seattle (like me  ).

Oh yeah, forgot to mention you could be spending that 45 minutes on a laptop posting drivel here instead of stuck in your car swerving from bad drivers on 520. :awesomework:
