This is for all of you that don't like wasps and yellow jackets or folks that are allergic.
If you see a BIG ol yellow jacket or wasp floating around like its lost, KILL IT.
Y/Js and Wasps are different than bees in a few ways. One big difference is repopulation.
Bees get too big of a colony and hatch a new queen and one queen leaves with half the hive in a "swarm" and finds a new home, thus "cloning" the hive. Bees are GOOD. The whole hive hibernates over the cold season and will start working again once it warms up. Again honey bees are good and friendly. Honey bees always nest inside an existing structure. They build combs and seal cracks in existing spaces, but don't build hives.
Y/Js and Wasp colonies DIE every winter. They make a paper nest,it gets bigger, then it rains and gets cold and the hive dies and the nest gets destroyed by weather. The queen knows that winter is coming and leaves the hive. When she leaves she is fertilized and ready to start a new colony in the spring.
So with the warm weather we have had these last couple days, there have been countless big dumb lost looking Y/Js hovering around the windows and nooks and crannies at my place looking for a new nesting spot to start a hive and begin hatching out larvae and begin a colony. Paper hives are always hornets or Y/J or wasps.
Every BIG slow Yellow jacket or Hornet you kill right now is like killing a WHOLE new nest.
Make it a point to swat as many as you can. Killem dead.
Better yet, get some honey bees and a hive box and contribute to the local plant growth in your area also!!
