I don't get it. Why is this better than a regular drillbit? Is it just so there's more material to put threads into?

Exactly. The parts we use it on are 1/4" thick and after flow drilling you end up with over 1/2" of material to thread. Before we used to drill and weld in a threaded bung. I'll see if I can grab a pic of before vs now. Plus the time saved welding has more than paid for the initial cost.
