General causes of a run away diesel:
If the turbo seal leaks on the intake side, it feeds unregulated fuel into the combustion chamber.
If the piston rings leak on the compression stroke, the crank case oil mist gets blown through the CCV (crank case vent) and into the intake, this feeds unregulated fuel into the combustion chamber, add a restricted or dirty air filter and you have a run away diesel.
An over full crankcase oil level can cause massive unregulated fuel into the combustion chamber leading to a run away diesel.
If the intake valve guides leak and the head oil drains are clogged with sludge, it feeds increasing amounts of unregulated fuel into the combustion chamber, which can cause or contribute to a run away.
If the piston rings leak on the intake stroke, it feeds unregulated fuel into the combustion chamber.
The larger the volume of unregulated fuel going into the combustion chamber, the greater the risk of a run away diesel.

So what causes a diesel to "runaway".....and why do they do it?

Leaky turbo I'm my experiences.

Unregulated, unstoppable amount of combustible fuel.

All you can do is choke it off (cut off the air).

I've seen a Cummins eat a air filter and a hand full of shop towels! :****:

Truthfully the only thing that could cause an electronic engine like the duramax to run away would be an electrical malfunction within the pcm or the intake side of the turbo seals blown feeding oil to the intake. That's the only thing that is going to cause enough combustible material to get to the cylinders. The older diesels that had a mechanical fuel system were a little more prone to do things like this. Especially the old 2 strokes that had the fuel rack. The old Detroit diesel 8v71 and 8v92 motors were horrible about it if the fuel rack wasn't set properly. Watched a fire truck try to run away one day. Those things about have an engine room in the middle of them and you have nowhere to go. Clip board saved the day that time.

Re:

We had a couple 6v92s and an 8v92 where I used to work. They were fun to drive. I was told the best way to drive them was to put your door in the door jamb and slam it shut to get yourself good and pissed off then just drive it like ya hate it.
One of the 6v motors would run backwards at times. Never happened to me driving but I was with the boss when he put it in 3rd and the thing went backwards.

They definitely sounds unique too. My buddy lived down the road from the shop and could tell when one was coming down the road.

Kush, did you guys every do shows/comps? My buddies Aaron Cline with Ill conduct, Grant and Greg Sunday with KC's most wanted and Dan Jackson (a few loose screws) are all locals. The first 3 are good buddies now and I built a roll bike for Dan a couple years ago.

Cool video scooter, rig flexes well! :****:

Thanks Ant! I am just now getting to see some videos of the 4 link working. It seems to work decent so far and is stable as hell. I'm not sure on the geometry but it was the best I could do with what I had to work with. I didn't try to run the numbers in a calculator and I am afraid of what I might see if I do. I am going to :driving: and let it be.

A little video my wife took this past weekend. Not really all that difficult but still a pretty cool climb. First time I had ever been on this trail and had a great time.
Scooter, do you have a link to where this is on YouTube? I wanted to send it to a buddy of mine that isn't on HL.

You can try looking in my YouTube channel.......scooterpaul77........... or you can search for the title "Climbing Tombstone on the Widowmaker Trail Derby Day 2016". I am not the most computer savvy person so I am sure there is an easier way.

Here are a couple more from the past weekend on the same trail:

This is my buddy's 4-Runner with his girlfriend driving. She hasn't spent much time in the driver's seat and did well considering he really needs hydro assist steering.

Here is another of a buddy's Cherokee.

And another of the 4-Runner.

One more of my junk on the same trail. Don't mind the passenger side seatbelt hanging out. The wife was in a hurry to get out and film.
