Shocks

here is the newb question of the day....


How do you figure out what travel shocks you need?

and once thats figured out.. where can i get a CHEAP set of shocks?

Flex your suspension and measure the max extension and compression.
There are application guides out there for most shock manufacturers so you can figure out what shock you need based on dimensions.

Got the truck out on the trails for a test run. Ran Tahuya.

Found out that I have a problem with my inner beads blowing as well as my powersteering overheating.

Got the powersteering problem fixed (i think)

You have any thoughts on the shocks issue yet? Get a chance to come up with some dimensions?

Nah not yet. I just have to weld on my rear shock hoop now. I've had it for a while just didn't put it on before my shake down.

Forgot to post pics of my truck after I did that bead sealant.. The next day I aired down to about 3 PSI.. Looked killer..

Climbed up a stump and slid down it.. Tore off my grill and tweaked my hood some.

Bobbing beds?!?!?!

So for any of you that read this that have actually done it.


Hows hard is this? I'm a competant welder and have a good welder(so thats not an issue). I've been wanting to dive into this for a while but don't really know where to start.

Any info would be appreciated.

As for bobbing the bed that's easy. Just measure from the tail forward a spot that looks good to cut and mark it at the top and bottom. I like to use masking tape to strike the line as it doesn't twist and turn to mess up the straighness of your line.

I then use a skinny wheel to cut straight down teh side above the bed floor on both sides. Then I take a string and lay it across tehbed floor through the cuts I made in teh sides and spray some contrasting rattle can across teh string to show where to cut the floor and tail off. Once that's done measure however far forward you want to cut off and repeat. Then it's just a matter of welding it back together. I usually put some 1" square tube inside the bed rails and clamp them in place to help hold things in check. Makes life a lot easier.

Another good thing to do is use the section you cut out as a reinforced backer on the inside of the bed, about a 2" wide strip.

Yea it dosent need much, just enough to help reinforce your seam and help with any gaps from those not so straight lines....oops.:redneck:

Finally started my bed bob! Got it about half way done in a few hours yesterday.

Started off with this.

Started measuring and laying out the tape on where I was going to cut. I measured six inches in from my tailgate for the first cut and decided I was going to take out 12 inches in total. Used a piece of string with a weight on the end(a ghetto ass plumbob) to make my marks down the side and measured and taped off my cut lines.

Started off making cuts with the grinder and a cut-off wheel but didn't like the cuts I was getting so I switched to the sawzall.

Cut both of the sides all the way down and used a string to mark across the bottom where I needed to cut.

Did the same process with the inside cut but left the floor in place for right now. I still need to remove some wires from under the bed and take the spare tire mount off.

Now I did mess up and didn't remove the wiring harness completely from the rear so I sliced some wires. I'll have to rewire my tail-lights before I put this all back together.

Got a little more done today. Just have to final fit it and weld her up!

Going to cut the frame right behind the shackle mounts.. Get rid of the overhang.

Well my first official breakage happened yesterday @ Elbe. We (supersamurai, sascwatch and a few others) ran Busy Wild and while driving down Mainline noticed a slight problem.

Can you find the issue?
