Need some help with my 4.3 CPI

Yeah, you didn't get some of the info. I sent Rick and Kevin a email. The timing advance goes batshit crazy on Datamaster when I retard the timing to about -12deg. It runs pretty good and will finally idle but does smell way rich. I checked it with a light and the timing was erratic between -14 and +4 but the computer showed 0-28deg bounce. I unplugged the ESC and rechecked. The Advance on the computer was still very wild around -2 to 28deg but when checked with a light sat steady at -12deg.

Before I retarded the timing it wouldn't idle at all but the timing was steady at 30-31deg 1250rpm, no load, 10"map, 2% tps.

Thats what I was getting at. With the est in bypass the ecm data for timing is not a true reading to what the dist is actually doing.

The checksum light came on for a second at 11898 so the data is not reliable.......
Mike for instance the timing goes from 21.1 to 27.4 to 20.0...26.7....3.2....22.9...NEGATIVE 1.1..........25.0....11.6.....
All in less than one second!
There's no way this is actually happening.

Fawk, I feel like a queer in a whorehouse. I have all the tools, just not sure what to do with them!

If it were mine I would check the harness pin by pin then make sure the chip is inserted correctly. If you don't find the problem then go onto voltage at each pin.

All of this is assuming you don't have a mechanical issue. What about valve lash adjustment?

It would be interesting to see the same bit of data on a good runner just to verify a few of the data readings.

This discrepancy is just due to the base timing (at the distributor) being off.

So I'm a tooth off?

I think you may be on to something with the dizzy ground. There is no reason the timing should have gone all wanko just because I turned the dist a few degrees. Maybe the gasket got wadded up under it?

Why did the fuel trim cell go from 5 to 16 when I unplugged the ESC then stay at 16 when I plugged it back in?

If your setting the timing to -12, or -14degrees...what happens when you try and set it to 0degrees with the ESC unplugged?

Last Friday I was in the shop till midnight with my DVOM and checked EVERY wire from eng. plug to ecu plug.

I have ran it with both chips installed numerous times and the symptoms don't change. I may plug the stock prom in for shits and giggles now that I have DM to see what the difference is. You can't snap both retainers on the prom w/o it being all the way in.

No I mean the idle timing isn't set to zero because of the poor idle issue. The computer doesn't know what the initial timing is set at it can only assume it's set correctly. What I'm getting at is this part of it means nothing.

Yeah the dist ground is easy enough to confirm.
The trim cell should change with MAP and RPM changes so this is normal.
I assume you have a full time power lead hooked up?

That's what it is set at for the 1st 30min of the recording but the ESC was plugged in. That's when it won't idle for ****. Even after you unhook the ESC it's slightly better but still won't idle. Shown from 9762 to 10451. No ESC 0deg timing.

Yes it would be...I've not used DM more than a handfull of times so the files I have are from poor running rigs.:haha:
I wonder if it would work on my rig (aftermarket computer) then I could have a file of a good running rig for comparisons....
The actual data being displayed is the same other programs use too so it's not all that much different other than the format it's in..

Yours is a tbi rick?

Every time I try to google dm to dl it, it crashes firefox! My brain is toooo fried to try and figure this out tonight!:redneck:

Too bad you weren't closer I would have ya drag it out and spend some time playing with it--I love a good challenge...
