Help Support Hardline Crawlers:

I have had my snap-on tool box for about 12 years, paid 5k for it now the same model sells for 11k. The only problem I have ever had with it are the plastic drawer catches, only broke a couple of them. Their tools are expensive but so are the other tool dealers, I mostly have Snap-on sockets, I have never bought a full set of wrenches except some specialty ones, always on sale. If you use them professionaly you know why you need them.

I haven't looked at new tool box off the trucks in at least ten years so I'm not sure. My box at work is a Mac. I was sold when the salesman pulled the top/main drawer all the way out and then hopped up on the edge of it. He was easily 200lbs.

Edit: And that Mac is 15+ years old now.
 
Like John I have an old snap on box at home along with a newer one at work. The quality is still very good the box construction is damn near the same and the coatings on the box's are actually better.

The older boxes used rubber detents to keep the drawers from opening and the newer ones use a mechanical latch. The older ones used to wear out the rubber and the newer ones will break the plastic latch setup.

I dunno about some shops but space is critical and when I relocated to monroe I had to get rid of my tall double stack box for a large single with a nice stainless top for more work space..

You sure? Might wanna check again.

It is what it is and with money being tight everywhere even long time US manufacturers are shipping things over rather than building it here to save a few bucks. I'd get defensive if I found out I was buying imported stuff at ultra premium prices too. :eeek:
 
When I worked at the deere dealer we didn't have designated bays so you were always moving your box around. The floor was in awful shape after 25yrs of heavy equip use so it was really tough on rollaways. The craftsman, costco, and other "value line" boxes were total **** within 5yrs. My along with the other Snappy boxes held up really well. In 10yrs I've had 1 broken latch and that's it for issues.

As for tools. I love the Snappy wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, and ratchets. I do own a ton of other stuff too but the snapon is my go-to choice. I just love the warranty even when something is clearly abused. When I'm in the field I have to get creative to finish the job sometimes and my tools suffer. Never had an issue getting replacements.

I browsed through those briefly.... Lots of Blue POint stuff, which was mentioned earlier as being Chinese. Also lots of insignificant stuff, lights, drawer organizers, etc. I didn't see much that was standard type hand tools.

Wouldnt a double stack take up less floor space than a rectangular single?

Or is the added countertop on the single what your seeking?

I have been more than happy with my snap-on box that I got from Kev a while back...

I just need to get a top box to add more storage space to it for some of my other tools... one day I will find another good deal for the right $$...


but as far as tools go... i have used so many different brands... I am more than happy to use whatever it takes to get the job done. Have I broke some.. yup, sure have, mostly sockets and ratchets though, and usually because of some nut-job before me over tightening something or going ape **** with locktite... :mad:

all in all, if it gets the job done when you need it, i could care less what is stamped on it... but I still like my old Snap On box...
 
The only tool storage I own anymore is my mac 3 drawer cart. I can keep all of my hand tools in it comfortably, which are almost exclusively snap on, mac, or matco. Like with most of the boxes I have owned, I bought it used, and fully stocked with tools. What I really like about using a cart is that it is much more mobile than my old snappy box. At this point in my career I have no reason to own a full size toolbox. I only buy off the tool trucks, and only when I am in a bind for a special tool. I don't have a problem paying extra for the convenience of having a tool warrantied when I need it, without having to drive all over, and the tool trucks make it really easy come tax time, since I don't have to keep track of my reciepts.

Yep, Still sure about that...:awesomework: You showed all the goofy lil little consumables/misc specialty tools/battery chargers, etc... that even i won't buy from snappy unless they are on sale or something...you can get any of that stuff pretty much anywhere easily enough...

all the locks work and in the back of one of the drawers was the missing key..

it has been nice, once again, to have a box organized so when I want something I can just go and get it... and since it is all under lock and key, it will make it harder for someone to just "walk off" with it...
 
I like their sockets and ratchets, but I have a mix match of Snap On, Mac, Matco, Craftsman, Wiha, SK, etc made in the US. Then again, I also have Knipex, Wera, AST, etc made in Germany. I also use a Mac tool box, my personal favorite right now, Matco is a close second. I hate those Snap-On grip latch boxes and the higher end series is finally moving away from it, but as the OP said, I could build a garage for the price of one, haha.

I basically weigh the cost, quality, and number of times I foresee needing it. Sometimes a HF tool will work just fine once for an oddball job or to destroy as needed, sometimes I want to make an investment in something I will use daily. A smart consumer will compare prices just like everything else. For instance, Knipex makes a lot of my pliers, I can buy them from any regular tool vendor as "Knipex" brand for half the price of the Mac truck, which just prints "Mac Tools" on the handle opposite where it says "Knipex". I certainly agree some of their stuff is over priced, but that's what truck repos, clearances, used trade ins, buy one get ones, etc are for. Most of my stuff has been used, repo, trade in, or buy one get one free deals.

Spend money smart and you can get some nice stuff that has the same warranty for less money. I have been known to bargain during the BOGO deals to get something ELSE on the truck of a similar price for free when the "get one free" item is something I already have. Or, get a duplicate item of something you have free, sell to a friend, on CL, on eBay, etc and buy yourself something else with the money. Heck, trade it back into the dealer new and unopened later for truck credit, or let them keep the duplicate item for a payment on your account instead. There are LOTS of ways to save money if you have a cool dealer. And honestly, the Snap-On fans will pay top dollar for a used socket set later, just look on eBay or CL and compare prices of Craftsman or whatever tools to Snap-On from the same vintage. You really can make a decent decision when you can sell it for even half what you paid 10 years later when you're potentially injured, unemployed, and short on cash...

That said, I also like the convenience of the trucks stopping by, the fact I can spread out payments with no interest on tools I need but maybe can't afford in full right that second, the fact I am 90% of the time buying a US (or German) made product that isn't from China, AND I'm supporting a small business.

Me and some guys at work got sucked into buying some new boxes this passt month I feel we got a good deal.I took it home and left my beat up one at work would hate for someone to fuwk it up on accident.

What gets me is what some people sell there box used on the internet for they think its gold or they are counting all the interest they paid for it:eeek:
 
keep all those made in china stickers and put them on your rig when its all done.

I paid 5k for a box very similar to that black klr, and it was fully loaded with tools.

Curious why you don't count Cornwell in the big names but you include the predominantly foreign made Matco?

If I want anything from Matco I can buy it cheaper with another of Dannaher's brands on it about 99% of the time.

In my book, they are not (again for many reasons...some of which were the service sucked ass (not reliable), the tools were sub-par IMHO, dealing with mailing in tools for warranty??? No thanks...)... I also have done most of my purchasing of major hand tools 20+ yrs ago, when things were MUCH different...And every one of them save for a select few individual sockets are still going strong.
...Now with that said, I do understand that Cornwell/Proto/Craftsman are competetors..BUT I work with Proto tools at current job, and THERE IS A DIFFERENCE in fit/form/function...The sockets round off inside, and I've broken more of these in 1.5 yrs than I have in 20+ yrs with my Snappy's...Proof's in the puddin'...
