Re-venge YJ Tons Swap

1st trip out was a success I'd say. Steering didn't get any better but also no worse. Gonna have a word with psc tomorrow. Otherwise, rig worked well. Rear pinion seal started leaking and one front caliper liked to drag but that's it for issues found. Re (wife) seems really happy with it so now I can focus more on finishing touches like a proper dash and partially rebuilding the rear inner fenders. I only got a few pics from today.

Rig looks awesome and works pretty damn good. And she listens better than 99% of the guys i wheel with :dblthumb:

Thanks guys. I'm also really impressed with how well it did. Again, nothing revolutionary but as long as it works and (most importantly) is a comfortable ride, then we're in good shape.

She did great. I always had to keep in mind that she couldn't steer very well so a lot of it was just telling her a rough idea of where to go and let her maneuver as much or little as she could.
Also, the throttle is super touchy since I cut the pedal down so I need to figure out how to lengthen it a bit.

Good luck calling psc btw. I hope you have every component from them, if not they are dicks and tell ya what's not theirs is junk and blame it

I already figured that they're gonna blame the stock p pump. All I did to that was swap in a psc flow control valve so I could have an AN fitting there. Everything else is from psc and was new. I don't know everything about steering but it works fine when you turn the wheel quickly, gets sticky when you go slow and will even keep on creeping on it's own sometimes when you let go of the wheel. Rpm's and temp don't make any difference. Absolutely no bubbles or foaming in the res even after a full day of wheeling. All that seems more like an orbital issue to me but I'm sure they'll try to sell me a pump instead. Oh, and the cooler is just a standard oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator so really not much more than an extra couple of feet of tubing as far as the system is concerned.

Yup sounds like the orbital is bypassing but ya already know what they're gonna blame

Just spoke with them. He said they run a slightly smaller pulley than what the stock p pump uses but we ruled that out when I said rpm's make no difference. Now he's saying to try loosening the bolts between the column and orbital and see if that changes anything. Said there's really tight tolerances in there that can make it act weird if things aren't sitting right. I'll give that a try tonight and see what happens

First time I hear about that. Curious to see what happens.

I know for sure the pump isn't the problem.

So might be some truth to what he said. The pic shows where the column wants to sit when not restrained. Steers fine like that. Also acts up a little when I bolt it back up, but not as bad as before. I also noticed that not only did the column go down, but it also moved out, like towards the seat. So it seems possible that the combination of being forced up and in was acting on the valve. That said, I have no idea how it got that far off since I had it together and apart a couple of times between building and painting it. Maybe since the orbital mount was the last thing I welded up, it might've warped a little which equals a lot by the time you get to the end of the column. Didn't seem like I forced it into position on final assembly. Either way, looks like it might be my fault and if all I have to do is remake the column mount, I'll take it. At least I found it before I made a nice dash that fit around the column.

Can ya shim it or heat it and tweak it ?

Would be cool if it's just a 2h cut/weld fix.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge !

Shimming that much might look a little goofy. Heat might work. If not, no big deal to cut and weld. Actually probably easiest to just cut the mount around the middle and add a little tube with a slug. Then just weld it and grind it smooth.

I've seen that happen a few times actually back when we used to rig up homemade adapters and terrible mounts for random orbitals that came from farm equipment. Haven't thought about it in a long time

How's things progressing on the YJ that has had slight modifications since last October?View attachment 148950
Not a whole lot to speak of. Steering seems fine now. But while test driving it, 3 of the calipers were dragging. I'm guessing/hoping it's the 1989 master cylinder. Picked up a 2000 Dodge 2500 master today since it sounds like it'll work well with the tons and will pretty much bolt right up. Gotta get that on and go from there
