Toyota locker opinion.

I have a SAS'd 92 toyota pickup. It is serving daily driver duties right now, and it's got a 5.29 aussie front third and a 5.29 spool rear third. I am going to build an open 5.29 third because a selectable locker is not something I want to throw money at. I am looking for an opinion of what I should do. Leave the aussie locker in the front and put the open third in the rear. this would be good for snow since you have a front locker pulling you. or should i swap the aussie thats in the front right now to the rear and put the open third in the front. i just want it to be a little more driveable and that spooled rear is annoying as hell to drive everyday. eventually this will either get sold or it will be trailered to wheel so i will go back to lockers f/r but for now i am trying to seek practicality. thanks in advance for the opinions.

it's not relevant but i threw a pic in just for the hell of it.

Hell I'd leave it....
I've wheeled my spool in the snow.
I wouldn't want to make that much of a sacrifice.

just switch the third memeber around. the aussie locker behaves a lot better then a spool. plus if you just swith thirds it doesnt cost you anything.

Good post.

I have the Aussie locker in the rear with 5.29's and 35's and it has held up well. It behaves better than my friends Detroit, even. And, I just broke my ring and pinion, and the locker is ok. I thought for sure that would have popped it! Yeah, put the spool in the front for free. Plus, you are only using it with the hubs in.

BTW, that truck looks clean! Wish I had it....

isn't it pretty sketch to run a spooled third member in the front of a toyota? i thought that was asking for nothing but carnage.

You'll definetly need chromolies if you run a spool in the front. And hydro ass. if you want to turn it.

I'd say your set up perfect for wheeling right now. I like your idea of an opened rear diff for the street. It'l save tires and handle great. In about 30 min. you can swap the spooled 3rd back in for the trail.

so for you guys that have run an aussie in the rear, no complaints? are the road manners a lot better than a spool? i am thinking maybe just sell the spooled third and build another 5.29 aussie third so i will have aussies f/r

Can you scrounge up enough to just run Aussies front and rear. I mean shoot if your going to build a open diff whats that lunch box locker run like 250 new? I would not put the spool up front the new shafts you WILL need cost more than an aussie.

x2 in from my experience.

the only birfs i have broken were on the same front third (5.29 aussie) but with 38" tsls aired down to 8 psi. (that was in a different truck) i'll probably just build another aussie for the rear and either buy 30 splines or keep replacing grenaded birfs until i put a 60 in the front. thanks your the advice.

So far, I like my aussie better than the lock rite I ran for a while, and it seems to behave better than the Detroit in the rear of my buddies XJ (8.25")
Like I said, I thought than when I blew my rearend, it would have grenaded my locker, but no. Also, it only cost me like, $200 shipped off ebay.

I will probably have "foot-in mouth" syndrome soon, but I have now ran a locked frontend, stock birfs, w/35's that I commonly run down around 4-6 psi, and even give 'em a spin every now and again.... and I broke my rear! Man... I really do want to see how long the stock birfs last.
