Trick Welding Tables

I'm building a welding table, looking to see if anyone has any ideas on cool extra's to add on in the process?

I've seen things like holes for bolting things down, MIG torch holders, grinder racks, different types of feet, and wheels.

Anyone have a trick table to share?

Lots of good ideas like every 4 inch or 6 inch table is tapped for holding fictures. I agree with thicker is better:awesomework:
 
Never had the luxury of a welding table. Real sh*t is welded in the field IMHO....02c
I guess I would just make sure the bottom around the perimeter was built in such a way that you can clamp things down without obstructions.

I already made it out of a 1/2" top, 1" woulda been nice, but double the price.

I read all those pirate table threads, was curious to see what you guys had around here.
 
i don't have one of my own but one of my favorites I've used had the top drilled/tapped in grids for bolting stuff down.

x2 on the fire extinguisher holder.
 
Build in a 110 v power strip / outlet with an on/off light switch and a heavy duty, long extension cord. I'd probably put it underneath.

That way you can plug in grinders, drills, etc and when you're done just flip off the power.

You may also want to add a source of auxilary lighting.

Also might want to have a tool tray so you can leave normal welding items attached like clamps, jigs, scribes, welding tips, goggles, gloves tape measure etc
 
My table is 5' x 10' 1" thick. I have spots to hang all my clamps and visegrips on it. Levelers on every leg. I have holes drilled in the corners that let me bolt down my tubing notcher, hand bender and other things. I also have a few notches cut in the table that I use when i need to tap out a bolt and want to support the piece etc.

no pics on the computer but I can take some if your interested...its nothing fancy.
 
i couldnt do a cross support across the front on the bottom if you are planning on much seated welding. sometimes you want to scoot in real far. 110v outles ran. clamp hangers, and a vise thats removable/movable.
 
1 inch is not overkill, but yes it costs alot more. Dont put casters on it, its a welding table not a work bench you want it to stay true and not move around.
 
my bench on the "steel" side of the shop is 2 feet wide by 16 feet long. Its made of 1/4 plate and one end is 4 foot by 4 foot, kinda making it L shaped. It has a chop saw at one end and the steel rack on the wall behind it.

I also have a fab table that is 1/4 plate on top of a 2x2x1/4 angle frame work with castors. Very solid and rigid too.
 
I have contiplated building a table of some kind. But for a number of years I have been using an old table frame and a chunk of 1/2" plate.
 
I put mine on casters so I can move it out of my garage when I am welding but I have a large attached Garage and dont like the fumes in my brand ne house. I do agree that it needs to stay true but if you want to move it around casters make it alot eaiser nothing a level and some shimming cant fix
 
The outlet's are a good idea but I would run a 220v line and run some 110v outlets off of that.

That way a 15-20amp draw grinder or etc. won't be overloading the cord or plug.
