Maxxis 42" Comp Trepador coming

I've seen Krawlers make it up Cable Hill wet much easier than any SX has ever made it but there wasn't a crowd or anyone filming so it didn't happen :****:

Personally I don't think the SX is that great of a tire there's just not any better options out yet. I'm willing to bet the 42 Trep will outperform the SX, if not I'll admit I was wrong. From what I've seen a lot of what makes the SX work so well is just sheer size and toughness and a decent compound, although I think the compound could be better.

I believe you about cable hill and about the SX you know more than I do that's for sure! Nothing beats time in woods and rocks. If the made the SX with a better compound it would be nasty. I love the size and how tuff they are and I can air way down and not worry about the tire(crawling ). Interesting to see how the 42 does.

I think the toughness is part of the appeal of the sx, at least it was for me. Granted, any tire can pop but you seem to hear about it more with the krawlers. Not sure about the treps though, I remember tc killed one in Money Taker but that hit would've destroyed just about anything.

This is nothing more than the ford, chevy, dodge argument with tires. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. It all boils down to personal preference. No one tire out does the other hands down. Krawlers are sticky as the **** Kush is smoking but have silk sidewalls, SX's are huge, heavy, and tough as nails but aren't that sticky. The treps seem to be in the middle honestly. They don't seem that sticky to me but they have better sidewall protection that the bfg's. The 42 should make some good competition for the sx's. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and everyone else's stinks. :****:

I had a friend cut one of his sx sidewalls this past weekend at grayrock. I've actually witnessed several sx failures but I agree, they are definitely a tough tire. Treps are tough too. I bought my treps in 2011 and I've never had a failure. They're hooking harder in the rocks now than they ever have so I'm in no hurry to replace them. My next tire will be either the 43 or the new 42. I'm going to wait for some more info to come out on the 42 as far as design changes and compound changes before I pull the trigger on anything. I have a feeling that the 42 will be a great tire that will definitely compete with the 43 but we will see.

Here's what my tires look like after 5 years of consistent abusive riding.

It just blows my mind that 37's are small tires now. Really, the same with 39's. Those 43's are just so damn big and I know of several trails that have gotten so dug out since the 43's became popular that they just aren't passable anymore.

Unrelated, but does anyone know where to get a head-pad / rest like that? Or are they home-made?
Steal them off of older SxS's.

I'm 6 1 and my head sticks way above my basic suspension seats. I've looked into adding these. Couple of sites are saying they do more bad then good. However I can't afford new seats right now.

I'm sure there's a ton of people wondering if the 42" Maxxis Trepadors are going to live up to the hype. So far I'm really happy with them! I've only got about 90 minutes of time on them, but here are my initial thoughts -
The first thing everyone will notice is that they're big! They're 3" taller than a 40" Trepador BUT only 1/2" wider. They only weigh 12 lbs more than the 40" (110 lbs).
The size of the sidewall was the biggest concern for many that heard the 42's would be on a 17" wheel. I haven't really noticed that it's anything to be concerned about. I will say that sidewall deflection is something that's much easier to see by someone outside the vehicle.
For some reason I swear that the 42's were more difficult to break in. It took a lot of burning the tires off to round the front edge of the lugs. I've been assured that they are the same compound as the 40".
They definitely take more effort to spin. My little 1.4L is spooling up all the time. It will take more seat time to see how much power is affected in different scenarios.
There's no doubt that you're going to find these tires binding up the drivetrain more often. It's noticeable. They'll be a great test for my portals and Branik Motorsports 300m axle shafts.
If you've got an average steering system, you're going to hate life. The 3" PSC Motorsports cylinders on Prickle have enough power to shove the car around and get you out of a bind. I honestly think the massive power that the cylinders provide is key to making the huge 42's work well.
The 42" Treps made me feel like I could drive over anything. There's no doubt that they'll be awesome on a trail rig. For a competition buggy, I think there may be times that the 40" Trep works better. I'm going to be trying them out at Idaho X Rocks this weekend, so we'll see how they work in a competition environment. ????????

So on a local forum today I was reading where a guy talked to the higher ups in maxxis on these tires. Per what was posted, these tires do not have the same compound as the 40".
