1988 ford 7.3 IDI sluggish up hills

That would be Motorcraft glow plugs made in Beru (believe Germany). Otherwise don't try to cheap out with other brands, they don't last, swell and can break off inside the cylinder when being removed. Oilburners.net will get you a good running engine but they don't push the limits. Ford.com...

    shop recomendation for OBS PSD

Being that it's TTB, check the pivot mount bracket for the pass. side, this bracket has a tendency to break out. Ford still sells the part.

Diesel guru's, school us on buying a diesel

If you want to learn about the 7.3 IDI: http://www.oilburners.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34 this site probably has the most info for the old Fords. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum117/ If you get an IDI, find one with a turbo on it already (aftermark or stock), it will save you...

    Ford Diesel (pre-powerstroke)

Forgot to add, check the front spring bushing and panard bushing very well. These truck can get a bad case of death wobble if the bushings aren't tight.

    Ford Diesel (pre-powerstroke)

http://www.oilburners.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34 they max about 180hp to rear wheels with simple mods. run the coolent additive open the intake and exhaust make sure the trans is kept cool As said above they aren't a powerstroke but are are a workhorse, all mechanical, and parts are much...

    Mufflers and Cats

If you go flowmaster, get the 70 or 80 series. I had a 40 on a ZJ with no cat, sounded OK but resonated badly at 30-35 and was a little hard to hear the back seat at hi-way speeds. We did run a Dynomax muffler on the racecar, 2.3L Ford, looked like a glorified glasspack, but did like the sound.

    fuel additives

Two stroke oil and acetone mix. Probably won't work with the new rigs but makes my old 7.3 run quiet and smooth plus a couple extra mpg.

    CB's ?

X2 They can be "tuned" to talk OK but they are small and fit nicely. The 520 has a RF gain to keep the noise down.

    Daily driver MT tire options?

X2 on BFG ATs The last set on my GC got 80K with a fulltime 4x4 system. Between the tires and quadra trac the GC goes great on the road. Once the GC starts pushing snow the QT sucks.

    new radio

to bad 99% of the channels are illegal to transmit on. And if you do have your tech+ FCC license, the 10meter range is mostly code anyway. Been there done that, still have a couple of radios but if you really want to talk get your HAM license and talk to the world.

    Trailer Queens and licensing/registration

there is a thread that just went through, it was talking about getting his Jeep back to street legal after having an ORV tag. Someone put a bit in there about running a rig through inspection not even close to street legal, IIRC, all you have to do is prove the rig is your, title, receipts...

    trailer winch

I'm looking for a trail winch, pulling dead cars of whatever happens to be the flavor of the day. I know a 8000# Warn would be nice but it's just not in the budget, and haven't been keeping up on winches either so I'm not really sure what is out there. Is there a inexpensive winch that will...

    Synchro'd vs. non-synchro'd

If you must know what it's like, go drive your truck without the clutch. 2-4 range usually are the easiest to change when learning. 1-2 & 4-5 (overdrive) are pains.

    Price differances

Sounds a good learning opportunity. Hmmmmmmmm....... Stuff required for doing that: Large work bench nice but a driveway will work, cinder block, or wood chunks will work. Not pretty or the most effective but use what you have. Plasma cutter very nice but not necessary, a grinder and cutoff...

How long do glow plugs generally last?

Lots of info on the Fordtrucks.com site. read until your eyes cross And stole this from another thread, the motorcraft (ZD9) made in germany is what they are talking about, others burn up and mushroom, which makes a bit of a problem getting them out: ...not all Motorcraft plugs are Beru...

    trans cooler

Thought I saw a thread on this but can't seems to find it but: Anybody have a favorite auto trans cooler? or just find the largest cooling capacity? It will be used for an E4OD in a Ford 1 ton.

Voyager by Tekonsha, it's good for 4 axles. Only towed with it once, new to me truck, but once adjusted correctly seem to work very nice.
