So the kid and the significant other want me to build them a mild trail rig out of my 85 4runner I recently got in trade. It would work great beings it's an auto but is it strong enough? Do the auto's use a different tcase? Can I lower the ratio in the tcase? I just don't want to put this together just to have to drag it across every obstacle.

The auto is plenty strong. The tcase is a chain driven case, so it is different. Inchworm makes an adapter to put a gear driven case in front of the chain case though

Grab a 23 spline AW4 out of a cherocar and put the bellhousing, oil pan and torque converter from the A340H onto the AW4 then put a dana 300 behind it or double it with a 231/300 and have the best of it all.

I think the auto 4 banger trannys are way better than the V6 ones.
