AutoZone Story. Sad but True

i think the guy on hold for 45 minutes is a idiot,,,, although most kids behind the counter havent worked on a lot of cars let alone can read your mind what 9 in ford your working on,,,, there are different seats and bearings for different one,, if he doesnt know what the heck hes working on, how should some one thats never seen the car(rig) before know ?
why didnt he pull a seal and match a number ? I have a number of rigs and they dont have the correct axles, tcase or engines in them,, i KNOW what the part is, that guys needs to grow up , . If i ask for a seal for a np205 in a 98s10blazer, or a ujoint a 98 blazer with a 14 bolt rear end, i aspect to get the wrong one, but if i ask for a 85 chevy 3/4 ton ujoint,, ill get the right one.

and for the old guy that knew every part when you threw it on the counter and didnt need a book to look it up , i lots of respect for him , and i did learn a lot from him, but there are a about a zillion more parts out there, than there was just 20 years ago,, dont expect him to remember them all :)

We got a great old parts store in my town. Don't even care if it's 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.

I need spindle bearings, so I called autozone this morning and told them the part number. They're not in stock, but can have them by 2:30 this afternoon. Worst experience of my life :****:

Was at auto-zone again yesterday, in line getting some shop rags. The couple in front of me was needing a part. I could tell the woman behind the counter was confused. She kept trying to find it, then yelled at the THREE people stocking behind her, one was the manager, trying to figure it out. The kept saying I think you need to look up piston bearing, or mabe rocker shaft, one said I think it looks like a rainbow,. I finally just said, you all looking for a rod bearing. Damn it looked like they all won jeopardy. She said, it pulled that up, I thought ,no ****. I said ,it's gonna offer a few sizes, when it did they all looked at me. I just shrugged and said I needed to pay and leave.

I went into Oreilys the other day and was needing a carb gasket for my turbo install on my chaindrive buggy. So I just told the guy I needed it for an 80 mustang with a turbo. No problem but we got to order it I say before you order it is there a pic I can see yes I look at pics it's an anti vibration gasket it won't work for me I say . The guy says well this is what it calls for I say yes but do you have gasket material to make my own he say I think so I just said take me to it. I pick out a roll and say this is me I'll make it out of this. He said i don't know why or how you're gonna make that so I finally said it's a custom setup and the motor is in a rail buggy . The look I got after that comment was priceless molaugh

My Dodge eats rear wheel seals like a fat kid eating Skittles i replace it at least once a year. Every time i go in to the part store they bring the wrong one out. The one they bring out will fit through the one i need. Last time the guy got pissed when i told him it was the wrong one. I had the seal i pulled out in my hand and he still wanted to argue that the computer said i needed the smaller one.

Not a parts store, but pretty much the same rant. Last night pulling the headers off of my 304, I rounded off a bolt head. Well I figure no big deal, I'll go pick up a set of easy outs Sunday. So headed out this morning, but the mom and pop shops were closed so I head to the nearest big box store. I browse through the tool section, but don't see anything. I find one of their dept specialist and ask for easy outs, "yeah we have those." And leads me to the stripped screw extractors. I explain that I'm looking for something more stout I need the spiral extractors for hardened bolts. "Oh we don't have anything like that."
So I decide to poke around one last time and look what I find.

Side note I have completely given up on using screw extractors I always end up breaking one or drilling a little off and doesn't work right. I have found welding a new nut on works so much better and the heat from welding normally helps free up the stuck bolt

If and only if you are running gas. With Flux, I struggle to get enough penetration to get it to turn. Next year I shall set up some bottles and will be able to have less headaches on broken bolts.

This is me exactly! Welding a nut or bolt is easier for me.

I welded quite a few on with flux and twisted what was left of the head of the bolt off. This one I couldn't get a socket on though and even a boxed end wrench was tight, so I center punched the bolt head before drilling. I really wanted a set of the straight flute extractors, but they're harder to find locally.

When drilling a broken bolt out I like to use a left handed drill bit.

Had some very good luck using them. They don't always work on seized bolts but nothing like having one just start to turn and back on out. A lot of the extractor kits come with left handed bits.
