Thinking about doing something unusual for me and picking up a commuter car. I am leaning towards a 2012-14 Cruze. Any reason I shouldn't? Also I really don't want a turbo, because it seems like one more thing that can fail. What motor is just naturally aspirated in those things?

The N/A motors almost never fail. They are 1.8s. The turbos have a couple of issues, but are avoidable with regular oil changes, and the turbos are Cheap and easy to replace, even in your garage.

My mechanic friend that worked on one claims that he is glad to know how crappy they are built. He said he is surprised that they are not scattered all over the road from hitting a pothole.

For the most part it's hard to go wrong with a gm fwd car. They all have their issues but for the most part they are tanks.

One of my daughters had a 2012 non turbo. Other than changing oil and a set of tires, it had no problems at 105,000 when she sold it.

My son has a 2014 LTZ. Been a good car and gets great fuel mileage. He did have turbo problems but was fixed under warranty. Be sure and drive one first. His has leather seats and to me they are very hard and not comfortable. Not sure about cloth. Overall though he has been pretty pleased with it.

Not educated on the Cruze.....but IMO, id at least look at the Camry or the Corolla. Its hard to beat them.

My lady bought a 2013 about a year ago. Great mileage, plenty of power and comfortable. Its "sporty" too...

Thanks guys. Yes I am open to similar cars. My parents bought a new Focus in 2012 and so far, so good on their car. I've thought about that route too.

Nothing ford. :****:

Re:

I love my Malibu, just wish tje 2.4L 4 banger got better fuel economy. It is 23/27 since I've had it. My buddy has a 16 model with the turbo 4 banger and says he gets 37 mpg. As for comforts, style, and options, I desire nothing else in a commuter car. Just wish it would get 30+ mpgs under regular driving.

I think if it was gonna be a daily, you could pick up a used Subaru WRX.....4drs.....AWD.....they're pretty stout if you leave them alone(don't rice'em up). Or even just a regular NON turbo version. Be kind of a cool car to pimp around in.

I like the Acura TSX's too. Again...if you can find them unmolested. It's just hard for me to drive bland / cookie cutter commuters.

My girlfriend has a 2013 Cruze and has had great luck so far. Cloth seats are pretty comfy, surprisingly quiet and comfortable ride and handles like a go cart. 37 mpg on the interstate and still 31 driving 80+.

I like those acura tls too jd, especially with the nice type s wheels.

My favorite subaru is a blue 04 sti, and that doesnt make any sense to buy. Too much to go wrong, getting older, bad mpgs. I agree though man. Ive never owned a boring car in my life, but the buggy and tow rig always need attention and i only have so much time.

Thanks yankster!

Sounds like I need to sell the Malibu and buy a cruze!

What kind of leg room is in the Cruze? Not the newest ones, the '11, '12, '13, etc. I am 6'1" and with the ole fake leg, I can't manipulate my foot, it is always pointing out/up, so sometimes leg room is cramped depending on how far the seat goes back and how the **** under the dash is made. This Malibu has the most leg room of any car I've had before, with the seat all the way back and the open room that is behind all the stuff under the dash for my foot to go with plenty clearance, I can almost straighten my leg all the way straight while driving (not in relaxed position, just saying I can do it to provide aspect on how much leg room is there). The Malibu appears to be a much longer car than the Cruze. The Malibu's trunk space is crazy big for a car that size (to me), and the passengers in the back seat has plenty leg room even with my seat nearly all the way back to where I am comfortable too. Like I said, my only gripe with the Malibu is fuel economy. It stays on 23.7ish in my normal driving range. Cruising 40 mph on a back road, instant fuel economy will be in the mid 50's, but any type of acceleration flat out kills it, even the slightest hills. It got something like 27.1 last time we made the 9 hour round trip drive to the casino in Philadelphia, MS. But that is half interstate and half 60mph long straight back roads. All easy driving, minimal stop and go. I wish is never got below 30 avg mpg, I'd be happy with it.

This kind of has me thinking about a Cruze for when we need to get a more economical DD. Looked on Craigslist and seems you can get in one pretty cheap.

Yeah, I wish I had've looked into the fuel economy more before I bought this Malibu, I would have probably opted for a Cruz. But hell, my Saturn had a 2.2 ecotec in it, never got under 30 mpgs no matter how I drove it. This Malibu has the 2.4 Ecotec in it, so I figured it would be damn close to the same. I may not fool with selling now and trying to get a Cruze, because I really don't have a majorly long commute or anything, but if I got a job with a longer commute, I'd definitely sell and look into a Cruze.

I was dead set on a Camry or Corolla before I bought the 'bu, but I didn't realize how plain jane even the upper trim levels were in the Toyota cars. The Chevy's come with way more bells and whistles it seems. Look better too.

I just bought a 1960 studebaker lark as a dd/commuter car. It cost 2800 bucks, gets 17 MPG if I don't drive like a fool (been getting 12) and my insurance costs less than 10 bucks a month.

Drive what you like, but don't forget insurance costs, car payment and maintenance into the equation. These cheap cars with good mpgs will not be cost effective if you don't drive enough to justify it. Simple math can help you out on this one.
