Custom Cut Safety Glass

I traded for a jeep a few weeks back and the previous owner had just done an overhaul/rebuild after a roll. The first thing I noticed was he had welded some 1/2" square tube in the front of cage for Im guessing Lexan to be screwed to.

Well we all know lexan just dont stand the test of time as far as scratches and hazing. Whats that leave? safety glass. Its what your car windshield is made of in case your wondering. Most side windows are tempered and would not be cost effective nor safe in this application.
My line of work involves cutting laminated safety glass in all shapes/sizes for boats all over the US and beyond. I made a few templates of the holes across front of cage and cut the glass.
The method of putting the glass in is basically 2 sided tape and thats about all Im gonna say to keep from letting out a work secret. I did have some clamps on it for a period of time to help cure the process. The last thing I did was apply some sealant around the edges.
Another way to install them is by using window urethane and I didnt want that big a mess if I need to replace one.

Pics:

only one I got uploaded of what it looks like

Time will tell if this was worth the time. As long as I can avoid a roll over I see it lasting quite a while and can wipe it off w/o all the scratching.
one things for sure, I wont freeze this winter from wind chill :****:

That looks good, and nice looking Jeep too. Unless you roll hard enough to cause the roll cage to shift or bend a section around the windshield, I would think it will last pretty well even through a rollover.

There is a product called speed glass that works well I have had two windshields made for side x sides and one for a jeep out of it very durable and wont scratch may be a option for you if the laminated don't work I have a body shop and my glass shop guy gets it for me

Ive heard of the speed glass but since I have access to the glass I used it and saved a lil $$$. Im not sure what speed glass really is but theres a MR10 Hard surface lexan that is more scratch resistant (than plain lexan). It will still scratch but hold up better than plain lexan. If Speed glass is MR10 I cant see wasting money on it. The factory rzr windshield I had held up pretty good but did have some scratches and I was scared to death to wipe it off so I only ever cleaned it with the pressure washer to avoid a ton of swirls.

Whats the going rate of speed glass per sq ft? Is it sold in 4x8 sheets or can u buy any size you need?

I agree on the rollover, if its a mild roll and the cage doesnt bend I can see the glass holding up.

The speed glass will not scratch before I used the first piece I tried to scratch it with a red 3M scotchbrite pad didnt make a mark on it was still in my SXS after 4 years of use with no scratches Im not sure on pricing I have not bought any in a couple years but my friend at glass shop still uses it at times I will ask him and see

I have SpeedGlas in the 38 Special. I just Windex to get the mud off. First paper towel with a lot of Windex and wipe mud off. Second paper towel to buff clean. No scratches since 2010.

4 years and no scratches....Im calling BS :flipoff1: Thats impressive. From a business stand point it may be worth us selling this stuff in our line up at work.

heres a couple outside pics to show how light a tint it really is.

Where do you find speed glass? I've tried to look it up and it keeps coming up with welding helmets :dunno: I've never heard of it till now.

You got me motivated to search and i came up with this.....

Segment from the site describing the product and as I figured its basically in the category of MR10 Lexan. May be a lil more scratch resistant though.

I've got the same story to tell. My old blue buggy had 5 years worth of ABUSE and only 1 or 2 scratches. I put in on my next Bruiser buggy as well and 0 scratches after 1 year or so.

BTW, your windshield does look awesome and how you mitered them in is beautiful. :dblthumb:
