I think Carl Jantz modifies a d60 spool to fit. I don't recall what all he does to do so ...

Yes Carl does modified a Dana 60 to use a 70 ring gear.

Yep,

I ended up buying another complete d70 to get a good carrier when I tore down my axle and found the carrier bearing journals were junk on the carrier
