I have finally got a chance to start putting the CJ7 back together. Over the past few years, we've had to move a few times. Each time the Jeep project button gets reset. It has always seemed to take a back seat to other things going on. I have said no to a bunch of offers to crew chief on race cars, odd jobs, foster kids, and other time killing activities. Its time to get the Jeep back on the road!

I figured the first place to start was to get the engine back together and put in. I got traded this AMC 360 strait across for the 258 that was in there. The 360 had a burnt valve in the head, but the short block was a reman in good condition. So, I pulled the motor back down to the short block and cleaned it up. Lots of care was given to keeping dirt/grime out of the engine. The block is ready for paint tonight. After it is painted, then its onto the heads. I got a set of heads that were rebuilt less than 20k miles ago. It will not take much to get them ready. I'm going to replace the valve stem seals, grind off any casting flashing (just looks like crap) and do a generally good degrease clean up. The block is going to be a real dark, midnight blue while the heads will be the same color.

Had to stop by the dollar store yesterday to get the wife some stuff for her office meeting. While there I checked out the tool section (if you can call it that) and picked up a nice small wire brush set for $1. Then I cruised over to the paint section and scored two cans of Duplicolor engine paint for $1 a can! I priced it at another store later, its $8.

Getting excited about actually getting back out wheeling. :redneck:

The old days...

So whats your plan for the rest of the drivetrain? What are you planning to do with it, trail rig, rock crawler, restore?

It has a T-18 tranny and a Dana 300 T-case that's getting a clocking ring. Those are going to stay. I have a 3/8" plate I am going to run for a flat belly pan. I do have a Dana 60 I am building for the rear, and a HP 44 for the front. Once those are in place, not many more mods are planned. It is basically going to be the family wheeler so the Wife and our two kids can go wheeling. I have a spare body that I am eventually going to replace all the rust in, sandblast, paint, and Line-X the inside. Nothing hard core. That's what the 42 Flat Fender is going to be for. :redneck:

Got the block painted today. Turned out pretty good. Now its onto the heads, oil pan, and all the accessory brackets. :redneck:

Looks really nice, but one thing---you should remove the paint that's right against the water jacket in this pic...

Paint there is just askin for an external leak!:; Can't wait to see this one finished/put back together/or whatever you are calling it!!!:haha:

Yea, I missed that in the initial tape job. I think I am going to wait until I get the head gaskets, do a trial fit, and see if I need to remove any other paint to get a good seal. :redneck:

Well, after yet another move last November, I am getting even closer to having the Jeep back on the road. The heads are getting redone (Thanks Patrick!).

I just got the T-18 back from being rebuilt today. The guy did an awesome job on it and only charged me $150.
