How do those springs work? Is there anything special you need to do to get them to seal? Or do they not seal perfectly and it just doesn't matter? I've always liked the idea of just pulling a spring to get everything apart.

just tight slip fit and springs pull the primary and collector ends together. i did put some high temp rtv to them just to make sure.

Is it a standard race-car thing to do or something you personally came up with?

Not sure on the race car side of it, but Ive seen dirtbikes and 4 wheelers set up like this since I can remember. Also seen it done on some hot rods and things like that.

Are the spring and weld-on hooks standard off-the-shelf parts somewhere or just stuff you sourced yourself?

springs are just universal snowbobile/motorcycle ones. pretty stiff to pull. and hooks are just bend from tig filler rod.

spring pulled collector lets the tubes move some. stainless tubes wont crack so easily when they can move some.
