If you have a rc helicopter and are in an elevator, when the elevator goes down does the helicopter go up or go down with the elevator??? Also when you go up in the elevator does the helicopter go down or up??

My guess is the helicopter goes down if you can't control it in an elevator.
Otherwise, it'll stay the same distance from surface, as the blades pushing air.
Air displacement happens outside the cart, it's not to drafty in there.:masturbanana[1]:

In an elevator, the helicopter would go the opposite the direction the car is traveling. Going down, the helicopter would most likely hit the ceiling, and going up, it would go down until it hits ground effect at the floor level.

That is to say that in order to maintain a helicopter at a constant hover inside a moving box, you would have to increase altitude as it rises, and decrease altitude as it lowers. Also, for what its worth, while driving down the highway at 60 MPH in an RV, an RC helicopter will go backwards towards the rear of the RV.

No..... The helicopter flies vertically in relation to the air around it. If the air moves up or down the helicopter moves with it.... Now to make it complicated a helicopter of any size will struggle to fly in air which is restricted as the air inside the elevator is. Turbulence is a ***** for a helicopter. A very small helicopter inside a typical size elevator probably wouldn't experience this.....

So the helicopter is directly effected by the ground below it aka air pushing downwards?
 
If the elevator goes down real fast, the air having mass will move to the top thereby increasing the density at the top while lowering the density at the bottom. :D

I think it has to do with how "air tight" the elevator is. What you are saying makes perfect sense and you have no argument there from me, but most elevators have ventilation, fans, AC units, etc and are far from air tight. According to a friend who works on them, some even purposely move air through the car from the shaft as the car moves so the car doesn't create as much air pressure in the shaft which causes noise on other floors at the doors. Basically, instead of pushing the air out of the way with the car, they allow some of the air to pass through the car at a slower rate.

I have a few RC helicopters here, just no elevators handy, haha.

there is a LOT of mind **** in this thread and a ton of wrong information. heli would remain at the same altitude relative to the elevator "ground"

Because the mass of air is moving WITH the elevator. The elevator is its OWN environment and the heli knows nothing about anything further than the walls of the elevator.


The only issue I see is the turbulance brought up earlier. Its a small area and the heli moves air to make lift and maintain stability.

The LITTLE rc mini helis have thier own rules tho. NOT like a real chopper.


If the heli is small enough and the elevator is big enough then it will work fine.

aside from the variable air flow in the elavator which if we just for math sake say is at a constant.

an object in motian wants to stay in motian and an object not motain wants to stay not in motain IE the helo.

with that said the helo would stay sill apering to go down as the elavator goes up untill the force created by the rotterblade "lift" over comes the acceleration of the elevator thus the helo would lower untill a ballence of force equal the acceleration

when the elevator comes to a stop the reverse efect would come in to play or if going down in the elevator.
since you wouldent be overcoming as great as force "gravity" stoping or going down it is feasable to assume that controlling the helo from continuing in motain and hitting the top of the elavator as the eleavator slows,stops or lowers would be a serious challange with no rotterblade forces working in that direction

Yes but I think it would only be slight. Elevators don't accelerate/ decelerate instantly. You can feel this affect when riding inside an elevator but like I said it's very slight..... BTW this is called kinetic energy.

Funny thing is I was once a helicopter "expert" so to speak as I was a helicopter mechanic and crewchief where I logged ~ 2000 flight hours (has little to do with this thread). Currently I don't build elevators but I do build elevator shafts. I never thought I would tie those two things together, leave it up to NWW.:haha:
Air doesn't travel through an elevator. While the elevator car isn't air tight the inside of a elevator shaft is much bigger than the car itself. If air were to travel through the car it would have to be basically top to bottom and visa versa. The car floor is solid with no vents but if it did have vents a womans dress might go up around her ears Marylyn Monroe style when the elevator goes down.:haha:
There are exceptions to this of course like very old elevators where the sides are open like the Smith tower for instance. These move so slow it doesn't matter.

No and no..... Zero gravity implies there's no gravity to hold a atmosphere/ air in place. No air- no fly.
Now for the real question.... Do black helicopters fly in Eatonville at night?..... If it's in the dark of night and you can't see them are they still black?:corn:

Yes. The amount depends on the mass of the helo the acceleration of the elevator and the air currents via the size and air tightness of said elevator

It dont matter what color they are, the base's choppers rattle my fawkin windows till 1 am sometimes!

Hard to tell in that video which direction/ acceleration the elevator is moving. It sounded to me like they said "we were going up" when it ran into the elevator roof? If they were going up nothing really explains it except probably just hard to control the RC copter...
