Is there a reason that nobody tows with a box truck? It seems like it would be nice to have the buggy "indoors" for both towing and storing. As far as I can tell, the axle ratio is either 4.10 or 3.55, which should easily handle my requirements of highway travel and light loads.

What do you think? I keep running across these good deals on craig's list?

(My apologies, this is cross posted in Pirate's tow section)

Edit: As I look a little more that particular box truck might be under 12' but the question still stands. Why not a box truck?

I believe rockwild on here does, I think he's got a post on Pirate about it "redneck hauler" or something like that I think.

travis has one with a truck cab that's about 2 ton or larger. I don't see a damn bit of problem with a van truck though if its a 1 ton or larger with a diesel. especially for cheap as fug like the one above  late model 7.3 for 3k. must have 300k on it

Its no secret, I would haul with a box if my buggy would fit inside.

I looked at a couple "custom critical" trucks not all that long ago. They are like Peterbilts with a sleeper, then have a box on behind. The one had the indycar lift on the back and everything. Just the dollars were to great at the time.
So bigrig with a living quarter line a Toterhome, but with the space for the car on the back vs. a trailer.

Remember Dibble towing with an ambulance because it was a 1ton with bigblock power. He bragged he didn't have a note on it, but had a gas bill instead.

Ken Blume built a real cool box truck/Hauler for this seasn. So cool, Derek West sold his setup and just rides with Ken. They haul Kens in the box and Dereks n the trailer. Go to Pirateunder Tow rigs and search for it.

I had read that. The one thing I have been concerned with is....what if you damge the buggy like Levi did in abama, or I did there as well. Where it wont climb the front up and in?

I wish i'd saved picks of the hauler I looked at. It was PIMP.

Ok, I didn't find the truck I was talking about but this is a fine example but very upscale from it.

Yes, that truck is really nice. As for this box truck, I'm still thinking. There are always reasons not to get something like this but it does seem like it would be a nice safe tow rig. Heck, I could even two another rig if I wanted to and I could set up a sleeping area. Hmm.

I would have to have one hell of a hauler to put my rig in! plus, I dunno if the HOA (FAGS) would like it in the driveway...lol If I had nice buggy, that would definately be a great idea...get an older beater to drive to work, have the wifes nice car and something like that....PIMPIN :afro:

I've looked at the box trucks alot.
Down side
Most 10,000 pound limit
250 horse, is about max
Ride quality
Height of floor.
The gearing
Trans.

check out the following

www.expiditersonline.com

http://www.trucksforsale.com/

they are called expidite trucks but you'll want to really investigate the gearing so you can run hwy speeds easy

this ****er has been for sale for yrs
http://www.trucksforsale.com/truck/3040/truck-for-sale
I think he was at 12 when I was lookin

this one is nice http://www.trucksforsale.com/truck/3719/truck-for-sale
4.63 gears but a 7spd - youd just have to check rpms at hwy speed be nice to cruise around 1500 and be able to downshift to get around 2000 for hils

these things really drop in price at 500k or 5-6yrs old

companies won't give contracts to drivers with old worn out trucks - that age limit varies for each company
then the only market for them is owner/operators that work on their own. Seems these guys can't just "buy" a truck so they have to finance it thru dealer and therefore the used/resale market is weird

Wow, that's good tow rig tech. I'm still stuck on this idea. I'll call and ask how many miles it has on Monday. It's not nearly as pimp as some of the bigger ones I've been looking at but it's not as expensive either and it might do for a guy that tow 15-20 weekends a year.

Matt you're on to saomething. I got passed by a budget 1ton boxed truck rental and a car trailer with a pristine Bandit on it. Birf on the hood and all.
Any who I drive hammerdown in the dmax and this thing ate my lunch. And just walked away south of Dallas.
Chevy van so I'm think 8.0 liter gasser

The one I'm looking at isn't that pimp. It has a 215hp 7.3 powerstroke mounted to a 4 speed tranny w/OD. The rear axle has 4.10 gearing so I'm guessing that the cruising speed will be around 70 to 75. The box is 16x8' which should be enough for my 12' buggy plus anything else I want to bring. Heck, just having a pull down couch and a roll up awning would be pretty nice.

Also, I've slowed down a bit lately as the cost of gas has gone up.

my old F350 got 12-14mpg towing, i'd bet that a powerstroke box truck does much worse
