Plated dirt bike ?

Looking around for a older Cheap plated dirt bike. Not sure what makes one street legal. Can someone fill me in on this and what my choices of bikes are. I like the yamaha WR250s Not sure if they can be street legal or not.
I have a 90 toyota 2 wheel drive truck that runs and drives good but not to pretty that I would like to work some kind of trade for a bike.

I believe you can make the WR250 street legal. I know they sell the 250 and 450 with a "street kit" that comes with road tires, blinkers and headlight taillight ready to roll.

My buddy has a yzf400 that he bought which had been converted to street legal. He has a set of dirt wheels and a set of super moto and has never been pulled over or questioned about it's legality on either set.

Go with a bike that has a headlight and tail light already, then all you have to do is tap in for the blinkers if you even run blinkers, some people dont and just use hand signals but i dont think that is legal to not have the blinkers all together.

I dont know a whole lot but i hope that helps.

Just bough a 2001 wr426f already converted to dual sport for a couple grand off craigslist. Rocky Mountain ATV sells the kit to convert them over to street use. Also like CarnationSensation said get a bike that has the headlight already, something with a battery (electric start) makes the conversion even easier.

I'd stick with the WR or CRF---X as they seem to be super reliable and have the wide ratio gear set which is crucial for being able to go slow on trails and still have the top speed for roads.

If you find a motorcycle shop to approve the conversion then you can get any motorcycle plated. But I would suggest getting a bike which is already plated there are a lot out there for not a lot of money.

Been thinking about this myself. Kind of wanting to start with a CRF450X as it has plenty of power for on ramps and playing. A second set of wheels and tires would be nice as well cause then you could also run a different rear sprocket that is better geared for the type of street riding you plan to do and help keep the RPM's where the motor is happy on the freeway/highway.

That is a sweet bike but have you checked the price? They are spendy!
I ride a xr650l heavy but a good all around bike.
I am gonna convert my Dr 250 into an enduro also.

any honda or yamaha with a 5 speed is going to suck balls on the road...you cant have both dirt and street gearing ....or if you gear it in the middle its going to suck on both dirt and street...I had a 02 520 sx that was only 4 speed that was plated and it was really really ****ty on the street...I traded it for a 02 520 EXC that was plated and that bike was a 6 speed....and it was way better at everything... I woud say look for any year KTM EXC 450,520,525,530 with a 6 speed ....they will be the best all around bike ....you can prob find a clean one for under 3500 bucks...

I have a "11 yz450 now thats not plated ...

I have had lots of bikes and have been racing/riding my whole life

01 ...but they have a compression release ...and are a PITA to start

Like Gas said, if you can swing a KTM EXC (little more money) they are better than any of the jap dual sports. Or you could plate a jap MX bike but that would just add to the cost and they would suck on the road. Look for the newest EXC you can afford or if you can find a plated xc-w.

Not really looking to ride on the road too much just want to be street legal for places like naches so you can ride trail to trail and all the main roads. I've seen too many dirt bikes over there getting tickets.

Have you found a shop that will certify a motorcycle or will you just pay the shop to put all the street legal parts on the bike?

Haven't looked into it yet just trying to get some info for now. Can any shop do this or just certain ones?

Well here is the law... I have heard shops do not want the liability unless they have performed the work on the bike but then I have only talked with 2 shops about doing a XR400 for me. It was just more money then just buying an already plated bike. If you have a shop that will certify the bike after you DIY it then it would be worth the time and money.

Any more info on the Pickup? I have a 98 XR650L I might be interested in trading for a work truck. Big tank, pipe, air filter, 15/42 gearing, 70/30 tires, pro taper bars, CRF fenders, Daves mods on carb, e-start, LED tail and all four blinkers. Regular oil changes, just under 11.5 on the ticker.

That's a nice bike. I have the same one. Not the best trail bike but awesome for dirt road adventures in the MTS.

The brothers honda does them over here local, they charge $69.95 out the door for an inspection.

mark we do inspections at the shop i own. no matter the shop its in the law that it cant cost more than $100 we charge $50

Mark, you find a bike yet? Im thinking about selling mine some time soon to upgrade. I have a CRF450x, plated, with 2 sets of tires and wheels. Lots of extras. Bike is dialed and ready to rip. Let me know.
