Anyone wanna discuss wearing helmets during recreational wheeling.

I dont mind at all sporting one before a burly obstacle or something I have never tried. Im realistic though, Im probably not going to wear one everytime all the time 100% of the time when trail riding/ recreationally wheeling.

its outta plain ass stubborn ness as well Im sure...

I do see people hitting **** fast hard burly and think.. dammit they need a lid on. But its so common place in the sport not to wear the lid, its gonna take alot to get that common place everyone is doing it feel.

Anyway, this thread prompted my thoughts.

I do think its a great idea and I like to see comp people setting examples . Joel thanks for volunteering to hand out stickers bro ! thumb.gif ( your still gay..)

Sucks Tom died, but he was missing way more than a helmet.

I rock the race helmet when racing, and a skater bucket when not. I hate tapping my head furrrget about thumping it, I dont want anyone to hear how hollow it is.

I would not rock a Tom sticker, sorry.

Based on that accident I got to thinking about the helmet thing. Had it in the buggy right beside the seat when I flopped in Clayton. Lot of good it does me there.
Mine was slow and very easy, didn't bump the noodle at all. But it will be somthing that I will have with me from now on.

Remember the RickyB sequence he got of Noeln in the Bash buggy? Nolen got flyswattered quick, and where was the helmet? Buckeled in safely in the passenger seat.

I went to the skate shop after work one afternoon. And made the tweeker/pot smoker/boarder dude pull down no less than 15 helmets to try on.
He was pissed looking at me in a dress shirt and tie, old, and pretty beer gutted. I settled on a Pro-Tec, and thats the key. If its comfortable to wear, you'll wear it.

I have tried on Kelly's and it was to HARD! He wore mine in Hannibal, and was like, this thing rocks how well it fits, and how soft and comfortable it is.

Funny thing is, that was the trip I put the helmet in the buggy to weat on bad climbs and I started wearing my shoulder harness 100% of the time. The harness kept my body in the seat when I hit that tree. Damn lucky my brain did not hit that tree.

I bought a new small, lightweight climbing helmet and it is in the buggy.

I won't wear it all the time, in a place like Clayton where a roll won't co more than a flop I probably won't put it on.

Shoulder harnesses go a long way in keeping you in the cage. I think they are more important than a bucket.

I don't know Tom G, or even his login. Regarding the helmet, I've been wearing one for a few years now. I like to think that I truly don't care what anybody thinks but that's only true some of the time. I know there are a bunch of assholes that have talked trash about it. Whatever, I've lost count of how many times I've rolled/flopped my rig and it could get you any time. I typically wear a skater helmet because to me, it's about the right mix of style and comfort and I have a family that would be crushed if I got really hurt or killed.

For passengers I bring a spare and ask them to wear it. Except for rare exceptions, I don't even move the buggy unless everybody has the harnesses on. That's partially because people throw them over their shoulders into the radiator fans and partially because I don't have to predict when trouble will come.

When she comes along my daughter rocks one too.

I need to get one when I rec wheel with you Bama/KS folks. I was downright skeerd in Heaths rig in Disney with his style and motor  He landed HARD off Viagra and I forget if he was wearing a lid or not, but he was strapped in. Ken and Miles went up after people were leaving and I think Miles said he didn't even get strapped in Ben went up so fast. I don't need to hear **** like that.

I have been on the helmet band wagon for some time. I wear mine mostly when I know the situation is about to get ugly. My helmet has protected my noodle more than a few times. I am guilty of not wearing it also.

I think if you say you're "just going to wear it on tough climbs", then you're never going to wear it. You will never remember to put it on unless you get in the habit of wearing it all the time. It's so easy just to let that helmet sit strapped to the cage. Also, how many of these wheeling deaths happened while on a hard obstacle? Dave Halabuk was on a dry lakebed at the hammers, Tom Guaraldo was messing around at speed. The right helmet is no less comfortable than a hat, so what's the big deal? Accidents happen when you least expect it.

Dave is the best example of WEAR A HELMET. He was wearing his seatbelt, lap only and konked his head on the ground right? How many of you have been there? P has I know, and he's lucky.

The pic of Cole rolling while doing cyclones with damn near his whole body hanging out of the jeep. That looked scary as hell to me.

I have started rocking a helmet more frequently....

...but a helmet wouldn't have saved Tom's life. Put your ****ing seatbelt on.

since there is already one link to pbb in here...how about another...

i say wyatt's post in here...don't know if anyone else saw this thread, but it is a little more in depth on the helmet thing....i found a couple that i like and will definitely get one before i do anything nutty...i linked a CF skull helmet in the thread somewhere.....prolly gonna get that one....

here is the thread in case anyone wants to see what others are doing to protect their domes....

I have a Pro-tec in the buggy, but have only put it on about 4 times in the last year trying hard climbs. Mostly Hot Springs or Disney, not much at Clayton.

My Prr-tec saved me from serious injury in Hannibal. Race 3, Kelly drove, and flopped on "The Eliminator", and I was on foot spotting on course.

I hooked the front winch to try and suck it over, and that slope was SOOOOO wet. I think everyone saw me fall from the front of the buggy (TOP) all the way down the driverside. My head bounced off the A pillar, and I caught my fall somewhat on the drivers window net. There is red paint on the A pillar from my Pro-Tec.

How fast did that happen? Instantly!
One second I was talking to Kelly next minute the little pine tree I had my foot braced against let loose and threw my ass down the hill.

I saw some vid of it, and it doesn't look good for me at all, you even here the crowd go "OHHHHH", and the announcer says something about it. But I spring right back up. Helmet took the full shot.

One of the problems is, most of us grew up in the whats a helmet culture. We rode everything without a helmet, hell we never thought twice about wearing one. Like I said in the past, I have ding my melon pretty hard so I try to wear mine. I need to wear it more. You know Ricky , if you wanted you could only take pics of people with their helmet on. If they don't have their helmet on charge double for the pic.
On a serious note helmets need to be worn, maybe not all the time ,but most certainly on a hard ob stakal. Seatbelts and harnesses thats a no brainer put um on always.

I was riding shotgun during the cyclones w/ Cole. I didn't have my shoulder harnesses on the first few. I'm really glad and thankful that I put them on when I was handed the video camera. I cinched down tight and never moved during that roll. I have since started wearing my harnesses a lot more often.

I was really pissed off at myself when I saw that picture. I knew better and I still didn't put them on. That was one of the hardest hits I have taken to date.

Another question on these helmets y'all are using, seems mostly skater helmets?? Do they take repeated hits well?

I would assume so since skaters dump it a lot. Motorcycle helmets after one good dinger some say it's junk or send it in for a check. I sat one of my Shoei's on the shelf since last year after a get off on the KLR and nice head shot. Helmet looks fine, but I have no idea and it's not worth it to send it in for checks since it's fairly old.

Anyway you get my point.
