When you tow, do you tie your rig to the axles, or to the suspended rig such as the bumpers or other components where you have to compress the suspension of the rig to tow it?

Chain and binder through the pintle hitch on the back, and two straps on the front bumper/crossmember. I know, I know, everyone says to strap to the axles, but when I draw it down, it's tight against the bumpstops. I'd rather have it strapped down tight this way, than to the axle and let the body flop around on the suspension.

*waits for tow nazis to lecture*

I have some nice nos bumper guards (tall ones) on my old ferd, I just hook sum rope over the top of them. sumtimes whenn you cant find rope just put it in 1 and low, never moves!:awesomework: remember to turn the wheels to the right so if anything happens it will roll to the shoulder:cool:

Karl you so fawking :rb:

Do what works for you. All I'm saying is for me I have to suck the body down, for mine to behave properly. Do what works for you. But do not have a trailer hit like that one.

I prefer to go to the axles, but my front axle prevents me from doing so (brakcets for brake hoses and such on the tiny little thing) so up front i go to the frame as i have no choice but the rear i do the axle

i do both, i tie the axels down front and rear. then since i have front and rear winchs :redneck: i suck them both down to eliminate the body roll.

something else to consider is tire pressure. once loaded up if they leak your tiedowns will loosen so i keep tabs on tire pressure as one of mine leaks.

every time i stop i always check.

Axles......

Yep X2

Axles. Hey, wait a minute, where's the 'bewbers' choice!!!!?:D

Bewbers and towing don't mix. :haha: :haha:

Joop,
How are you able to FULLY compress your suspension??? You do what you want but even with my suspension I strap to the axle. And how in the FAWK am I going to bend an axle tube by strapping it down at the axle?? This I want to know. :kissmybutt:

I have a electromagnet mounted under the decking of my trailer. I simply drive the Jeep o, throw the switch and done

I keep ratcheting until I'm on my bumpstops, thats how.

Now as far as a bending your axle , first its just a thought. Your pulling on the center on your axle by 2 planes, down and back. On both axles, so that puts stress on either the housing or the links.

I dont know just a thought, I preffer to ratchet mine down by the frame until its on the byump stops.

Awww butthurt

To the axles.

No not butt hurt, just think Karl is gay for argueing over this. Like I said before, "do what works for you, But dont weld your shitty ass hitch to your bumper, especially if you CANT ****ING WELD!!"

Nope not mad, just think Karl is gay for the arguement. I know what works for me.

Alot of us have been towing our junk for a long time.

#1 when tied to the suspension--your going to get movement
#2 your beating up on your suspension on the trailer---does that make sense?

I have tried both ways----I will go to my axles..

To the axles. If I had coils I might tie down the body as well, but I would still strap to the axles as well. With leafs, I'd have to really reef on the straps to get it down to the bumpstops, and then that puts all that suspension stress on the strap as well as the weight of keeping the rig on the trailer. Plus it just adds more wear on the springs since they're being fully compressed for the entire ride.

On top of that, I can just picture in my head the suspension cycling a little like Karl said while driving up a bumpy road or something, and the strap unloading and snapping back tight over and over again.

My rig doesn't sway around on the trailer just tied down to the axles, or if it does it has never bothered me enough to think about it for any period of time.

Short answer: axles, that's the way I've always done it and it's the safest and easiest to get tight and keep tight, IMO.

I tie to the axles.

BUT, i also strap down the front end of my rig to compress the coils.
It takes the roll out of the rig on the trailer.. trailers much better. you don't get the sway that you may get when its not strapped down to compress the suspension, but don't rely on this to hold the vehicle.

I say axles...but if you have alot of body roll..then why not both

should have gave that option for the survey... "or both"
