ok iv been look to buy a tow rig i have found i few i like but hey are std cab short bed and some are long bed.

what are the pros and cons to haves a long bed to a short bed with a stander cab. thanks

I would advize against a reg cab shorty for towing purposes...Strongly advize at least a long bed, preferably diesel, but a big block works ok too. What happened with that '97 Powerstroke you posted about abit ago???

short bed standard cab = half ton = not a tow rig unless you are talking about quads or something.

i disagree my father tows a heavy boat with a f150 with a 351 and the only diff that we have found between his f150 and his new f450 is mpg and 40mph up and over the hills to 75mph

I have no problem towing with mine. I do 60 up the none windy parts of chinook. its all about how you drive and how you load your trailer.

Short bed std cab, generally half ton (most common) as ben indicated. I yank mine around, (no pun intended) with a 1/2 dodge. I wish I had a bigger, longer truck to haul better. Short bed campers seem more difficult to find / less selection, and I am getting awfully tired of packing tents around - that last bit is just something to consider for the long run.

i have towed my 1998 ext cab short box dodge behind that red one with the mobile home trailer in the backgound with that red 1500 to towed fine just how you drive did 55 up elhi hill in bonney lake that was probably close to 9000 withthe truck and trailer

Crewcab longbed if you can swing it. Long wheelbase adds a ton of stability when towing. I love having all the room of the crewcab and the full bed.

If you answered "Well I can do 60 up a hill with my short bed" you're an idiot.. That has nothing to do with why we bring up the wheelbase.

I agree with zukkev. Gotta be a long bed, after that it's just what you have the money for.

And whoever said you can't tell the difference between an F150 and an F450.. Jump back in the honda and just go from point A to point B and forget everything else. I'd like to hear what a "heavy boat" is.

While I prefer a long bed for the additional room, for towing it's not so much bed length as it is wheelbase. You can't really say that a single cab pickup truck with an 8 foot bed tows any better than a Quad or Super Cab, Crew Cab, or Mega Cab pickup truck with a 6.5 foot bed. Also, few would dispute that 3/4 ton Suburbans and Excusrions tow well and they have no bed at all.

The only upside to towing with a shorty is reverse manuevering. It's a whole hellava lot easier to back up/turn around with a short wheelbase and trailer.

Towing aside, what else do you use the truck for? Hauling **** around. Go with the long bed. I love being able to stack plywood and 2x4s in the bed and put the tailgate UP.

I knew I should have been more specific when I saw you reading.. They have been "suggesting" as far as I can tell from the original post and pictures. That they meant reg cab. I should know better then to not make it perfectly clear :corn:

Yea, one is set up properly and will get you there in a timely much safer manor. Or you can piss everyone off on the road. A guy at work here tows his flatfender behind his late 70's Datsun 4 banger that empty is over it's weight limit because of the bumpers, lumber rack, etc etc.. He goes up the pass at 25.. Yea he can do it. Just like you could with the F150, but should you?
