if you were to buy a tow rig...

Most importantly stay away from the automatic tranny in the late 90's 12v dodges. I easily melted one a few years ago towing a 16ft. camper and I have two buddys that also burned thiers up just hotroddin around town. Now I have a 09' Duramax dually, auto six speed w/ the option to manually shift.:awesomework:
 
nooo.. There's WAY more Fords on the road with drivers saying "look at me!". Dodge is just more popular on the forums because we want the truck with the most power :fawkdancesmiley:

Chevy's and Fords aren't near as few and far between as they used to be. With the Dmax getting ironed out in recent years and engines in Fords that can finally produce some power. They are gaining popularity.

And if anyone comes back to the "Well I just need a truck to tow my trail rig".. It's like someone saying a stock wrangler is plenty for them to go down the trail.

You'll do that with every dodge tranny up to 07.5 :redneck:

The only problems I've had with my Ford have been self induced looking for more power. 97 F350 with 7.3 and auto. Probably close to 300hp now.... It's due for a fuel pump here shortly but it has 205k on it. I'm not chasing power anymore...

getting to 500 pissed me off too much.. I'm just gunna try and skip it now! No point in getting the truck back on the road for a while though. It can't fit the kids anyways. Maybe I should bought a Ford or Chevy with true 4 doors :haha:

I know all of the motors are capable of producing good power. I know EVERY brand is gonna have it's issues. My criteria was under $30k after tax(this was 2+ years ago), full crew cab, and a RELIABLE auto trans. for my constant towing duties. In my mind, that left the GM with Duramax and Allison. Two years later, 40k miles, having a trailer hooked up at least 2 days a week it seems like, I don't regret my decision one bit. I've had ONE major pain in the ass issue. There was a recall on an injector harness, it was a $20 fix but caused some delays on the way to KOH last year. Other than that I love the truck. Prior to this I had the coveted '98 Dodge quad cab 12v, 5 speed, 4x4..... it was great, but with 3 boys I needed a full crew cab.

A tow rig I would build or have would be a 3 axle truck(not pickup) [peterbilt]with 18 spd, cat, big custom camper w/everything, big diesel gen unit, 1 rig deck with option to pull a 5th wheel instead.

Now, for a realistic tow rig/daily driver, either a newer duramax, or a built 12 valve in front of a 5 spd in an older chevy dually CC, or if I was looking for affordable, 12 valve 5 spd dodge.
 
I had a '96 Dodge before I bought my '02 Ford, it was a good truck but the cab is way to small if you have a family. Ford has an awesome cab with lots of room and 4 full size doors. Even the '03 and newer Dodge (except the ugly mega cab) have a small crew cab with smaller doors. I would buy either a Ford or Dodge but I wouldn't buy a Chevy unless you are a fan of ifs and a low ride stance. I don't give a **** what my truck rides like, it's a 1 ton truck not a Caddy, I just hate ifs.:D

It's my tow rig, not my wheeling rig, I have no problem with a nice smooth ride. I've towed several thousand miles with my GMC and my old Dodge, the ride quality in the GM is NICE. :awesomework:
 
Yeah, you are right about the ride, my grandpa drives a chevy, he loves it. :fawkdancesmiley: Just messin with ya, I have not problem with GM I just don't like ifs and I like a little taller truck. There are pro's and con's to every brand you just have to buy what ya like.:D

Well after all the talk i went out and picked this up I figure the mono coil should be plenty strong

I haven't had any more issues then any of my buddies that own Fords or Chevy's.... It's a popular phrase for the competitors.. maybe it's to make them feel better when they get left alongside the road?

My 96 12v has around 115k and heres the stuff I've had issues with so far.
  • Broken heater fan switch knob
  • headliner falling out
  • headlight switch melted
  • over head map light cracked fell out
  • seat ripped
  • duct tape holding the driver side door buzzer switch in
  • sheet metal on driver door holding window track fastener fatige cracked and tore out
  • doors are sagging at the hinges and hit the jams when closing
  • fuel tank sending unit failed
  • overdrive button light no worky
  • auto trans bought bought the farm twice (good now though :awesomework: 3k later)
  • Turbo is getting weak
  • Throttle return spring MIA
  • power window switch driver door cracked and fell in

Thats all I can think of now.

If I was buying an older 12 valve, I'd get a 5 speed, if around 200k put away 1500 for a fuel pump along with some cheddar for brakes, clutch, 5th gear nut etc.

You should just feel fortunate that you don't have to buy injection pumps too.:awesomework:
