DNR Reiter Motorized Trails Field Day

What an interesting day.. some points...

1) Open up the Rock Garden and flats near the '3rd' entrance THIS summer. The rock garden would be for 4x4s, and the flats for beginner 4x4s, atvs, and motorcycles.

2) There would be no provisions for parking for at least a year. The main parking lot would remain closed. You could not drive up and park under the power lines. DNR will be making a trail around the creek crossing so we don't have to go through the creek, but it won't be built for trucks and trailers.

3) The consultants were very receptive to more technical trail. DNR has indicated that Reiter will be suited for more technical trails and not built like Walker. Additionally there is the possibility that easier 4x4 trails would only be near the rd, while more technical trails would be up near the top

4) DNR is open to the idea of using trees within trail design, allowing for them to be marked up if they're compensated for

5) We need to watch the aquifer recharge area, as well as creeks. There is a 170ft buffer near full-time creeks, 100ft buffer for seasonal ones. We can cross creeks, but they need engineered culverts or bridges. No trails that cross creeks will be built this summer.

So basically.. Rock garden this summer, but you can't park or camp. The upper area would remain 'closed'. How they'd enforce this? not sure. While its better than nothing, I think most people will avoid this area for other more complete landscapes this summer.

Lots of info good presented today, along with the necessary feed back to start things going. The consultants were good people and I hope they do us well.

I will not be holding out for Reiter to be my new-old stomping grounds.....like Jakob just said, "......other more complete landscapes". Realize this.

Couple of pics so my post is read.:;

On another note late in the day I had a short conversation with Stan Kohawski (sp?) who is David ways boss with the DNR. I gave Stan my opinion on something (imagine that) and I noted that I would rather see something more sustainable open if it meant waiting longer as opposed to building something in a hurry to do a small partial opening sometime this summer which I think would be a disaster..Anyways my point behind writing this was the expression on Stans face when I said that. It was like he knew exactly what I meant and they had a plan. I get the impression that if there's a small earlier opening it will be a test of sorts and Stan knows it will not work.
What they were talking about opening early is access to the rock garden only with none of the trails accessable around it. They would cut a new short trail through the trees from the road and keep a narrow corridoor under the power lines. There would only be parking at Reiter road for about 8 rigs. :rolleyes:Can you imagine the redneck convention this will invite when the word on the internet is Reiter is open and the rock garden is the place to be?
I can see that being a disaster.

I hope I'm wrong.

So you think they are planning on this giving them a reason to throw in the towel???

Not directly.

I think they are trying to open SOMETHING this year/summer as they have said they would. Basically trying to appease the masses and hold there "promise". HOWEVER, using the criteria set forth that they HAVE to use, the Rock Garden is really one of the only area's that is he easiest to open with the least effort. There are other areas they showed us that trails can be BUILT in, but that is a long process and they are starting with the easy areas first (logically), getting some trails open, then can work on the more "complicated" area and linking it all together. There is potential, and all the "Official" reps there seemed very interested and willing to open new areas up. But there is a long (and head hurting) process to do that. Simply blazing a new trail like we've done in the past (even using some of their guidelines on trail building) is like 1% of the effort and process.

Sucks, but thats the way it is. As Reiter first starts to open up again its going to be very fragmented and NOT non-street legal friendly. This sucks for me and many of the users that were at the meeting, but may also be a blessing to the area to keep the usage down till more areas can be developed.

I can tell you this, if/when they do reopen anything STAY ON THE TRAIL. Blazing off the designated trails WILL lead to areas being shut down again. The DNR appears to be WANTING to make this work for us, but if we mess it up, its much easier to throw in the towel. So keep the assholes and ego's at bay.

You do realize this means telling the hillbilly MFer's that don't webwheel not to do what they will continue to do... I think it's gonna be hard for "them" not to tear off in every direction... Are there going to be large signs saying "STAY ON THE TRAIL(S)!" ???

The phrase "Own Worst Enemy" comes to mind. :(

I think they do know that they are setting up for a FAIL. And how will Ron enforce any of this when he is not always there?

While at the lower lot before we headed out I talked to a guy in a Jeep who came to wheel and hadn't heard of the closure. I also talked to a guy with a dirtbike who had also came planning to ride and hadn't heard anything about the closure. I guess these must be the 1% of our population who still uses Dial-Up Internet? :haha:

Well if this is the way its going to happen i'll have to have the digital camera at the ready to document people that are doing the wrong things
that would get the area closed down again after it starts getting reopened!!!!!:011:Couldn't attend any of the trail watch meeting due to work but i'll still be watching!!!!!:awesomework:

If I had my way. YES. IMO signage goes a LONG way into making the honest people honest. Sure it will get torn down... for a while. Eventually it wont. Also IMO if its SIGNED, you can enforce it and enforce it hard. If its not signed, then how the hell is the casual (read not Internet user that has been [trying] to follow this crap) going to know.

But I'm not in charge. Nor am I going to be involved much in this. I'll help where I can, and offer support and ideas, but I have much larger priority's and time commitments in my life right now. Wheeling for me is a hobby and something I enjoy. But not a life style or passion.

also if it is opened this summer it would be "DAY USE ONLY" no camping. The camp ground would be built at a later date with-in the "Plan".

Hi All:

Thanks for the post Binder. You are not the only one that feels that way.

Had a late lunch with a couple of the other participants on Saturday and one said that he thought it would be better to delay the re-opening of Reiter for one year so that it could be re-opened as a complete plan.

Can't say that I disagree with that sentiment.

Regards,

Alan
