"Stomper Legend"

Since I miss driving the Stomper back in the ol days when it was on 40s, I figured this ol chevy that Kev had would be perfect.

I seen this truck in his add and fell in love. I have a soft place for 67 and 68 chevy trucks. I used to drive the ol stomper daily for years till it got 44s then it was no so fun to drive anymore. I miss driving that ol beast.

I figured this would be like "stomper II" hence the "Stomper Legend" play!! Seems bringing back old rigs is cool so here goes.

I have been daily driving this truck since the day after it got home here.

I have put quite a few miles on it so far. Its a little low geared for the freeway but it loves to drive everywhere else.

Here it the sweetness. (man she is purdy)

First thing I did was take it over to me friend Tom's shop to brag about my new jewel. Tom is a fine lover of these ol chevy trucks so the new rig felt right at home over at his place.

He wouldnt admit it but I knew he was jealous! :cheer:

Its got a 402 with some goodies. A 4 speed sm420 and real low gears (4.56)

Im going to leave it alone for while and juts fix small items and drive it but when I do mollest it Im going to add a D60 front axle and a divorced 205 and some big ol tires. Either 38s or 40s whichever comes along with the best deal first.

Then Im going to keep daily driving it.

whats a 402? a 396... You can probably start that damn truck in 4th gear and run it out

A 396 went to 402 in mid 69.

Thanks guys. I love this truck. I show it to everybody that comes over.

I had a hard time getting the ol lady to go to dinner with me cuz the heater didnt work.

So I got the controls wired up and working smoothly and then replaced the heater core. I had to remove the inner fender and hood hinge to get it out. Cleaned all the firewall passages out and put a pair of new heater hoses on it too.

I started hitting my ol crusty chevy buddies and got a pair of baddass Holley valve covers off of the old dragboat. Said he couldnt run them anymore cuz he had a stud girdle now and they were too short.

While I had the valve covers off I wrote down the casting number and casting date so I could run them later.

Got the new covers and gaskets on and almost wanked on to it. :masturbanana[1]:

Then I ran the numbers. Kevin had told me it had a 454 but after looking up the numbers I think different. The heads were cat in middle 1971 and are listed as 396/402 heads. No 396s were actually made in 71, only 402s. It has early oval port heads too. All the evidence is pointing at it being a 402. :cheer:

I tried to fix the first edelbrock carb.

I installed and tried to fix the second edelbrock carb. Was a little better but still sucked.

Then I found an old Holley carb I had been lugging around for ages. I pulled it out of its five gallon bucket and stated cleaning it off. Blew it out and fur went everywhere. Turns out it had a rotten rodent trapped under the secondary venturi.
I got it all mounted up and tuned in and now it burns out. :awesomework:

But if ya stabbed it long enough to have the vacuum secondaries open up then it would idle high after stopping till ya shut it off and let the vacuum go away and then the secondaries close all the way and then it would idle perfect again when restarted. I farted with it and put a new diaphram in it and no dice.

Then while I asked a few friends about fixing it and such, one of them mentioned he had a 750 spreadbore double pumper, mechanical secondary Holley for $80. I was all over it like stink on ****.

I am waiting to put it on till I can find a nice aluminum intake manifold.

Flush, burnout.

The first day I drove it I figured out the gas gauge didnt work. Luckily my bro in law was just up the road on his way home and pulled me around the block to a gas station.

So I went out to the Stomper and stole the fuel gauge out of it and have been using it on the new truck.

I got about a quarter stick left. :redneck:

I wondered myself about the engine being a 396/402...but I went with Geoff on that, and never checked the numbers myself! Score for you!!!

Theres no doubt, You tottaly love that truck. This is going to be a awesome build up.

brad the spread bore holleys only came 650 or 800CFM,either will be great on that motor..i also have a soft spot for the 67-8 trucks...have owned many and still currently have a 67....looking forward to the 60 install build thread!:awesomework:
