Somebody mentioned it a couple weeks ago but nobody started a Gee-Tar thread. Been wanting to replace a busted string on this thing and try and finally learn how to play it. Sounds like I'm going to be back to being single again so I think it would be a good way to spend my time and a good way to pick up new chicks. Just need to know where to start once I find me some strings and figure out how to get them on. Any good YouTube videos on string replacement and tuning? How about what chords to start with and easy songs to learn to get me hooked? I'm a big fan of old country and bluegrass so anything along those lines would be up my alley.

First rule of learning guitar: learn the riff to smoke on the water
Second rule of learning guitar: repeat until everyone around you hates you

Find a local shop and have them swap the strings and set the action up. If its been sitting for a while or been subject to temp/humidity changes the neck and bridge may be out of whack. Most small shops will show you how to string it if you catch them on a slow day.

As far as chords, A, C, D, E and G will be your most common for starting. B and F are a little less common, again, for beginners. Sorry, but I'm not much of a teacher since I was never taught.

This too. It's hard to learn when you play the right notes, but they don't sound right. A wacky guitar will do that.

Google "Three Chord Guitar" he will have you playing fun stuff in no time. I think that is the key, to learn and play songs and "riffs" you really enjoy. It will make learning a lot more fun !!

I've been trying to teach myself for about a year now. The chords BeerJ mentioned are fairly easy to learn. First song I learned to play all the way through was "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show. It uses those chords mentioned and the pattern is the same all the way through. The strum pattern is pretty easy to pick out too just by listening to the song. Good luck and don't get aggravated if it doesn't come quickly! :dblthumb:

I recommend AC/DC for anyone who loves guitar & wants to learn. Songs like Dirty Deeds are great for everyone, but there are some really soulful solos that will keep you busy for a while once you get better :****:

:dblthumb: Thats what I did!

I started with metallica. But I also started with an electric. Mostly power chords and single string stuff. Then tool, rage, and log. Got more technical with some vai, eric johnson and malmsteen. Now I play a lot of tool again. Learn something new everyday.

You hear LOG's new single from their newest album that's coming out? Got clean vocals in it! I'm all for the hard core LOG, but that was an interesting change up of things.

Had no idea. I'll have to see if I can find it. Thanks for the heads up thumb.gif

Edit* Damn, new album this month and 3 videos out already. This is the first I've heard of it. I guess social media has some perks. So far I like all the new songs. Willie looks like he's 20 with the short hair and all the weight he lost. Lots of lyrics inspired from randy's stint in the Czech Republic

That's what I thought! Yeah, he said with all the stuff on his mind, he just didn't feel like barking through this whole album with the rage of all the other albums.

Ashes is still my favorite.

Don't play guitar but played drums since I was a kid. My 9 year old playing some!

If you can rip Cliffs of Dover, kudos to you sir. That one kicked my ass back in the day. Now, 15 years later I can barely link chords together. Quit playing in high school and kind of regret it.
