John G, Gone but never Forgotten...

I will also add that it was impossible to arrive at a big ride before John or leave after him. Also I didn't know John well when he was partying, so I missed that side of him. I know the old propane palace used to get wild. I will say I never saw the inside of any RV he owned! Those RV's were like Fort Knox to most everybody!

I always kidded John and asked him if i could use his bathroom in his rv. Never got the green light... I told him i would give a courtesy flush.

I only met him once at Hawk Pride. We were working on a broken Jeep and he drove his buggy over and asked if we needed any help. He let us borrow his welder so that guy could keep riding. He didn't know any of us and told us where the welder was and the other tools in case we needed them.

This was a privilege I was fortunate enough to get. One thing he always told me was that I didn't have to take off my shoes. Personally, I don't think I would have felt right leaving them on. I got the opportunity to go on some Thursday-Sunday trips with him and he always had me a good cup of coffee and nestled in that RV, we had some of the most memorable, most influential talks of my adult life. He didn't spare me his opinion on business dealings, personal relationships, or if he thought I had had too many drinks the night before.

Ok John G was the MAN in rock crawling. As much respect as I have for all the drivers I grew up in the sport with, John is who always just amazed me. He was intimidating to us young bucks to say the least. We all drove wild and broke stuff constantly, and John purposely would come crawl whatever we where beating on. He was just a cool guy that I always had so much respect for and thought about him when i thought about a guy who lived a fun life. That said, the coolest memory of John for me is him in the old single seater, I had tried several attempts at climbing the Lunch Line and didn't make it that day. Next thing I knew JG was crawling it with ease and i'll be danged !!!! He freaking turned around on the middle of it! And then just eased back by me with his mixed drink swinging in that swiveled cup holder. Hate he's gone, he could absolutely pull off some crazy lines. Great to here he led so many people to a better way of life.

That's me in the first video telling him where to put his passenger front tire, he listened to me, and honestly didn't know who I was. Pretty cool that someone with his experience, willing to still listen to someone he doesn't know kinda spot for him.

John G classic spot for me at the Rocket City Rockcrawlers King of the Hill race.

Me; "John, which way do I go"?

John; "No where, you're broke dumbass and a guy in a Pathfinder just kicked your ass"

Me; " Well that makes me feel much better" lol

Yah, that was embarrassing as hell, but that guy beat that grocery getter with everything it had and little bit more. John revoked my ManCard after that. :'(

Nah, I was in old Blue By U.

As a matter of fact, that second picture was at RCRC KOTH and John was spotting me RIGHT there above that rock.

Wow, great stories. Some of you know that John and I go WAY BACK, 43 years. So I'd like to share a story from the year that we met.
It was Februrary and he calls to invite me to the lake. We were 2 skinny teenagers 14 and 15. Early the next morning John and his dad are in a bread truck in front of my house to pick me up. For those in the know, bread trucks never have more than 2 seats and they were occupied. All I can see is cardboard boxes. So I throw myself on the boxes and off we go. Bread trucks aren't conducive to conversation at highway speeds. So I'm thinking cold, rainy, noisy uncomfortable bread truck full of boxes, what the hell kind of lake trip is this.
Next we arrive at the lake. After I extricated myself from the truck, it was time to unload. Things got better when John opened the back doors. Just inside were 2 dirt bikes. Hot dog. Get the bikes out then things get worse. All the boxes were full of a modern cone shaped fireplace and the necessary chimney components for a complete installation. That's when I find out, if there's time AFTER we install the fireplace, we can ride. Of course John wanted to show me the family's boat. Mr. G allowed that for a bit while he shuffled boxes into the house. Well that's when John and I set out for a "three hour cruise". And as skinny teenagers will do, we smoked cigarettes. When we pulled up to the dock, Mr. G was none too pleased. Standing on the dock I watched John's dad go from peaved to genuinely pissed off. Why? Because not only had we been gone for hours he seemed to know we were smoking. How? Well one of the butts we tossed landed on the boats wet soft top. Stupid teenagers.
That evening, still having done no work, John and I were given the job of burning the boxes. We made a pile 15-20 feet high in the drizzle. A little accelerant and poof, nice fire. At the time a bunch of bikers were in the next house having a big time. We were enjoying the heat from the fire when all hell broke loose. The bikers come screaming at John and I with blankets. It seems from their vantage point the steam coming off our wet selves with the fire in the background we looked to be ON FIRE. Scared the hell out of John and I, but we survived our rescue.
The next morning we got on the bikes for just a short ride. I can't imagine pushing my luck this far with my dad. Well the short ride went 140 miles of dirt, only crossing paved roads. Actually one of my best days offroad. When we got back it was dark and Mr G had gotten the fireplace in. Time to load up and head home. Thank goodness for the acoustics in the bread truck John Sr. didn't waste his breath. This was our First Great Weekend together. Who knew it would be limited to just 2,236 more. Thanks John for all the memories.
I still have a souvenir from that day. We toured Lay Dam that day. When the tour guide wasn't looking, I procured the "hammer" from the "break glass in case of fire" alarm. Hopefully Alabama Power has replaced it by now. I'd hate to be responsible for burning down Lay Dam.

I had heard about John G before I even met him from Adam & Pops talkin about their wheelin buddies & trails 'Gardendale & Gray Rock' when we would see them at Tellico years ago.
They are the reason our group went to our first Fall for All at Gray Rock where I first met John G in the infamous "Checkerd Flag big Jeep"and had bein hangin out & wheelin with him ever since.
John G actually talked me into gettin on the computer "for Hardline"....I came into work one morning & told Dad I needed to get on the computer & he said WHAT???

Were those first two pictures from the Bears Den at Mountainside?

Re:

One of my favorite memories involved Eddy and JohnG at HPO. I had just lost my brakes in the Ditch and almost sideswiped a YJ. Still a little concerned, my Sami was parked in the middle of the flat spot next to JohnG's buggy.

Ed decides to poke the bear and says something along the lines of my shitty Sami and Solo Buggy were practically the same. John thought for half a second and said they both had 4 tires and that was where the similarities ended. It was a fun moment partly because someone else was messing with John and that it showed his ability to have fun riding and conversing with such a diverse crowd and that having money, or a lack there of, made no difference in who he was going to ride with.

There is a picture or two from that spot, on that day. I will try and post them up here in a bit.

Yes, think that big ledge in 2nd pic was called Hangtime?

I remember following John down in Bears den and he just took a right turn in the trees and started up a ledge. I just started laughing to myself which quickly changed to a stupid look of disbelief. He crawled like an Ant on steroids. :****:
