90's throw back....Manche build

I am confused. You said dry weight no tools, spare or driver passenger. Do they weight the car when it is ready to race or what?
Looks like it would be over weight once race ready.

Nope, that's how they weigh, dry, no tools, spares, or passengers. Must drive under power to cross the scales, meaning little fuel as possible.

Remember is not just KOH your teching for...it's ultra 4 series tech. Some races you won't need spares or a Co driver, or large fuel tanks, (think short course). That's the reasoning behind it. Is as fair as you can be across all car types and race courses.

No problem. I was surprised as well, once I started reading the rulebook. Cuz I know many of the trucks were over weight at the starting line...lol.

Not much shop time this weekend, but I finished the bump pads and cleaned some old bracketry from the rear housing.


Strike plate is 1/2, sides are 3/16, and bottom is 1/8.

Bumps are finish plated and in... sway bar is modified done and in, except for plating the sides of the brackets.

Big thank you @Paul for the donation to the cause!

Sway bar modded to run on the trailing arm. Not enough room to run the full length dom over the tube, so gonna try just running bushing brackets.

Took me a long time to get there, (self taught) . Been welding 20+ years for hobby. Wasnt until I started playing with thinner wires, (mostly .023, sometimes .030) that when I figured it out. I still struggle some days with finding my rhythm. I was a grinder for 10 years before really became a welder lol...and still probably would fail a cert.

Good shot of the sway bar from below

Almost finished rebuilding the rear upper link mounts to accept 1.25 heims. Upon closer inspection, apparently po was running 7/8-3/4 heims- reason for the narrow width.

Still lack capping and plating the drivers side, finish grinding old brackets from the tubes, and the back half will be very close to being done. Be mounting front bumps next.

I've never seen sway bar end links mounted opposite like that. I'm assuming it'll be fine since it didn't bind, just not used to it.

Yea it's not the norm. I didn't want to induce any extra twist to the lower links by being mounted to the side, and got lucky that there is enough misalignment in the small joint to operate this way.

Also, if I need to go to the other adjustment holes, I can just move the heim to the other side of the tab.

Rear end is tidied up. Upper link mounts complete, old tabs cleaned up. Only thing I may do is add some bash plating on the rear lower diff.

Also charged the shocks and threw a couple springs on to be ready to determine corner weight a little later.

I just feel like you have rushed through it. The craftsmanship and quality I think is lacking a little. I was hoping to see you really think out some of your designs. Instead you have just taken off the shelf Chinese aluminum foil and puzzled it together. I think it's just gonna rip apart at 120mph across the whoops

Lol, all jokes aside, it's lookin phenomenal. I really like the thinner material and using the bent boxing of materials ideas that HUGE mass manufacturers are utilizing. All done by hand after you cut it out of poster board.

Great work man. Keep it up

...and horse hooves, lots of glue on all the painters tape...Probably make more templates with it than board. Easy to transfer to cut table.

Finally received the Hougen bits for my newly acquired mag drill, (bought in a load of scrap tools- fastenal had it brought up to snuff for $150!) Had to test it out, so I went ahead and knocked out the bash protection on the rear diff.

First two bends done on my swag brake

Next four done by hand with the vise and a hammer...then of course sanded and scotchbrite treatment.

Idk, I've quit setting deadlines...lol. first it was Dixie. Then Nov 1, then new years, then koh- but i will not travel across country untested. There's so much I want to do and do right to the manche, and I have other paying projects in my shop that deserve proper attention as well-( '41 Chevy on s-10 frame, ls, 4l80: early bronco full frame off with all new steel body, 5.0, auto). I will say I'll be ready for riding season...but that's as close as I can nail it down at this point, lol.

The manche got to step outside and take a break today. Had a play date with its new roommate for the week.

The mall crawling 4410 is coming in for a nut and bolt general inspection to prep for KOH 2017. I appreciate the confidence from Jay and Redlyner Racing for the opportunity. Looking for a podium finish from our local team!
