Big Ass chainsaw!

don't know how I been missing this post ! you sir have stricken my fancy.. just quick question where did you get your Alaskan mill at like what price range? are you using a rip chain? and is there a reason why your running 3 inch slab cuts?(does chain just pretty much snap your work or what?)

Got it on CraigsList. It looks fun and is easy but its ALLOT of WORK. So just keep your eye open on CraigsList. Monthly there is a big power head and a mill setup listed cuz someone gave up.

Expect to pay about $100 for the Alaskan bar guide. They are about $200 new.

Now expect to spend about $500+ on a power head. I would say that an 066 is the minimum. Lots of times I wish I had more saw. Then I could put a bit more aggressive grind on the chain.

Rip chain is just normal chain thats cut at less of an angle. So If ya wanna pay way to much and wait awhile, order a rip chain. Other wise grind your own. If your gonna mill slabs you will need a chain grinding machine and get good at using it. That kinda makes buying milling chain not needed. Most milling chain sold is geared towards the east coast and milling hardwoods. Not really the hot ticket with the cedar and fir around here.

I cut allot of 3 inch slabs because they look good. If its over 24 wide then a 4 incher looks better tho. 2 inchers just look like lumber to me.
I try nbot to cut so many 4 inchers, cuz its so easy to turn them into beams or lumber! :redneck:

Not so sure I understand the last question?

I love chainsaw porn...

I am sitting at 4

my baby Stihl climbing saw, by rebuilt 021, my 029 hybrid built out of 029 032 and 036 parts, and my old school big ass Jonsered..

Anyone have any opinions on a good used price for a good running and looking MS440 with a 32" bar and new chain. All in really good shape. I just want to get a ball park figure as I am in the market for one.

About $400-500 Take a comp gauge and use it when looking. These are working saws and will either be owned by a pro thats used the **** out of it or by a wannabe thats ran it shitty.

Either way be prepared to look it over very well and test the comp.

Most of the guys I know have steered away from the 044/440 in favor of the 046/460. More power, not really any bigger/heavier.

Easy way to tell a 044/440 from a 046/460 is that the 046/460s have plastic fins on the flywheel. Theres allot of halfbreeds around, ya know 044 in 046/460 plastic/shrouds.

Look for a nice 046/044 over a MS series.

Thats a big saw to use for anything more than felling.

If ya just want a big saw get a 066. :D

The MS series has lots of little upgrades but beware of some people passing them off as "new". They haven't produced a 460 in nearly two years. That was replaced with a MS461 which is a great little saw. The MS660 is going away in august to be replaced with the MS661.

The only reason they changed to the MS designation over the "0" series is for easier model number changes when upgrading them.

Darren, let me know when you ready to upgrade to a 661, I might want your last 660. :redneck:

Sounds good!!
I have one that I bought a month ago and have maybe run three gallons of gas thru it. It would be a good one. :awesomework:

Just send me a PM when you are ready. My buddy and I have cash and would drive down to meet up with you.
