First 700 feet of the 89 year old Milton Madison bridge was blasted and dropped today. The bridge spans the Ohio river between Milton Ky. And Madison IN. Now comes the fun part of picking it all out of the river.

manitowoc 999 with 190 ft of boom I'm running to pull 50,000 pds at a time.

Blowing **** up is cool but cutting it apart and picking out sections at a time with a crane would have been smarter IMO.

Blowing the bridge and dropping it in the water is faster and safer. When they rig the explosives they rig it to drop it as well as cut it. When it hit the water they then brought out an excavator with a shear to cut the top cord of the bridge. After that we use the crane I'm running to get the biggest pieces and then use the excavator to feel around in the river and get the pieces left under the water. The piece in the picture that's hooked to the crane was 60,000 pounds. The pic of the guys in the man lift is showing them torching and rigging the piece.

Divers will come in when we think its clear and search the bottom of the river to ensure that all the steel is out.
