Business owners!

The plan is to get it rolling for a week solo, then bring in a GREAT mechanic and partner who has been working for the dealer for a decade, me and him crunch for as long as possible (a year hopefully) before bringing in a payroll employee. He and I both have working wives who carry health insurance for us. I'm trying to streamline this idea as much as possible to keep initial overhead to a minimum. TV in waiting room will have a slideshow and our "commercial" on loop, I already have a reliable computer, and relevant magazines and catalogs (to plant ideas in the customer's head), couple seats for furniture, banner sign, minimal licensing and insurance for the first month or two...

I'll talk to Gerald about how he got started. I'll also call Matt and talk to him about his VW business and how he gets to use the name.

Like I said, actually, like Patrick Holmann said, "I'm tired of making someone else rich." :'(

Re:

If you've got a plan you are 100% confident, assessed and are comfortable with the risk, and think you have a mind for outlook and doing what it takes to grow the business, that oughtta be enough. Lol

Give it hell Mike. If I had a Subaru, when it broke down(cause I know it would), I'd bring it to you. :****:

I figured if you went into business for yourself that it would be something like an adult film producer that specialised in BBW movies.

so much to say, no time right now. I have thoughts for you though
See Mike, running your own business means you barely even have time to post on here anymore. Kelly probably responded while on the toilet and he probably only had 3 free minutes to use the toilet. Haha

It more harder longer work than you can imagine. Be ready to live your business. It will affect almost every night, day, holiday, weekend and vacation. Be ready.

I work for the DOD full time and started my own business last November. It sucked at first, a lot of set backs, start up cost, legal stuff, etc. It was all worth it now, I love it. The other guys were right about living it 24/7, but that doesn't bother me. I like writing invoices, bidding jobs, meeting customers, etc.

I'm tired of making someone else rich. Some questions I have before I decide to go out on my own- Be ready to make yourself poor for a while. Curently making less than I have at any other place as a tech, but it's about the big picture.

Are utilities billed at a higher rate per KWh in a business than a residence? power is in AL, and the deposit I had to put down was based off how much power the previous tenant used. ::)

Let's say I open a Subaru repair facility, what can I put on the sign? I don't think I'm allowed to put Subaru up there without paying them a big licensing fee. Just don't use the emblems or logos.

For those of you with your own specialist shops, how do you go about going to school for "the new VVT engine" or "the new rubber band transmission"? Is that not a dealer only thing? Most are already factory trained by the dealer but as the newer models come out, you can struggle to get a grasp on how they operate sometimes, and you won't be working on crap that is under warranty so by the time it reaches your shop the aftermarket has a good grasp on what breaks and how to fix it. There are also factory manuals available for monthly subscriptions, Mitchel, identifix, alldata, ect, and there are some training courses offered through suppliers.

I would like to offer an adjustable rate lease to the building owner, say $500 first month, $1k next 6 months, and the full $1500 after a year to help with the burden of starting a new shop. Has anyone tried this? I spread my deposit out over the first 3 months with my landlord. Depends on how desperate they are to rent the space.

Thanks in advance! :dblthumb:  Do your homework on your state laws. I paid 2 months worth of workman's comp only to find out in AL you don't have to pay it if you have less than 5 employees. Talk to an accountant and a lawyer that specializes in the business you want to start, they will tell you pros and cons of LLC, s corp ect based on how you want to do business.

Re:

I agree 100% with talking with an accountant and a lawyer. You'll likely want a CPA anyways, so talking to one about your business plan right now is a good idea.

Oh and Gerald may be able to run his own business, but he can't use the quote function properly....must not be that hard! Lmao
