Thank you for asking before your visit.
If you are a California resident, any of your vehicles that do not have valid highway registration will require OHV identification, commonly called a green sticker. If you are the resident of another state, any of your vehicles that do not have valid registration or OHV identification from your home state will need a California OHV Nonresident Permit.
California OHV identification is obtained through your local Department of Motor Vehicles office. Nonresident Permits are available from a variety of vendors. You can find them on a list at: http://www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/pages/1234/files/2009_ohvnonresidentpermitvendors.pdf.
You may also want to check with the Bureau of Land Management’s Barstow Field Office for more information on Johnson Valley. Their website is: http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/barstow.html.
