This is somewhat related to the speedo thread.

What would be a good scan tool to buy for a '99 CTD? It would be neat if it could do the speedo, and also neat if it didn't cost a bazillion bucks, and very very neat if it actually worked with all the various scanable bits on these trucks besides the engine.

Would I be better off with a laptop, cable, and neato software?

I am the uber noob :haha:
I thought the Smarty was one of those leave-it-in-the-rig type programers. No?

Nope. http://store.dieseltruckresource.com/smtufor98dod.html

A lot of bang for the buck. The performance gains aren't as extreme as with a module that taps the injection pump wire, and you can't change the power levels on the fly, but for a good solid scan tool AND the extra performance gains, it's a good buy for someone with a stock rig that doesn't want to get fancy with other expensive modules. Plus if you decide to get a fueling box down the road, you can stack that on top of the smarty levels that don't add timing, and have one hell of a quick, driveable truck.
