Drinking and Wheeling

Hardline Crawlers - Rock Bouncer Builds, Tech & Off-Road Trail Talk

Help Support Hardline Crawlers:

This just popped into my head... why is it legal to have open containers in a boat?

Would the rules on a "trail" (non-maintained road) be similar to those on open water?

I don't know what kind of explanation I'm looking for here... I just thought it would make for an interesting comparison.

Thoughts????

That's a very good point. I see no difference in the two situations. Especially on busy boating days, I see more chance for trouble there than on some trail since everyone is going in all different directions...

I don't get the justification. Many who drink beer pack all their garbage out. Trash left on the trail is just a sign of jackassery, not a function of drinking.

I will argu this fact. Go look at all the popular obstacles and take a close look around at whats laying on the ground. Being out there all the time I see it and yes---90% of the crap is beer cans. Its not the jolly guy going down the trail thats the problem its the onlookers who find it easier to toss the can than put it into there rig. Also how did those onlookers get there--95% of the time they too are wheeling.

I don't care if you drink but if your impared and driving I will say something and probably seperate myself.

Jobless did mention that this sport is indeed dangerouse but when you impare your reflex's that just adds to it---I don't think a single person can argu that fact.

Its a goofy law but yet---you can get a DUI while operating a boat if your impared.

I know that... but I just think it's interesting that it's socially acceptable for people to drink while on a boat.

Indeed you can.

And I'm on the same page as Nuzzy in regards to the beer cans. Garbage is a "jackassery" problem, not a "drinking on the trail" problem. The same could be said for people eating food on the trail... some will throw their trash, some won't... but it's not part of the argument really IMO.

Its acceptable by the "law" myself I don't find it socially acceptable. Heck you won't even find me on a boat :haha:

I'm not disputing that a faction of the populous who drinks on the trail is also predisposed to littering...

Here's my point:

We as a wheeling community hate getting pigeon holed by the greenies as a bunch of wreckless yahoos that destroy nature because they happen to see SOME of the members tearing through meadows and damaging areas they shouldn't be. Now the rest of us get a bad name and our sport gets a black mark when the majority of us haven't DONE anything to deserve it.

Same logic holds true for the above situation... As long as people keep their empties in their rigs, no harm no foul. But when those who can drink and still follow good trail ettiquette get grouped together with those who have no respect, it's entirely unfair IMHO.

More than 75% of the crap we pick up on trails is beer cans and bottles funny how many times we find broken parts in the same spot. How many times have we seen all the emptys on the ground after a rig has flopped:looser: Drinking and wheeling is just plain moronic as is defending it:looser: these type of people are some of our sports own worst enemy:mad:

Sad but true. :booo:

It's funny, Andrea and I happened to be chatting with a couple of local Issaquah cops a few months back and we started talking about the last cleanup we did at Reiter. Cops said Reiter Pit? We said yeah, but we're calling it Reiter Trails now... We're really working towards getting the place cleaned up.

The one cops response: "That place will always be a pit!"

So many uphill battles, so little time...

What's wrong with flopping? What's wrong with breaking parts? It only hurts the owner of the rig's wallet...

Only issue I could see is fluids leaking while upside down, but rolls happen sober too. Ask Robin :redneck:

its an egg before the chicken kind of thing. Ive seen and heard of a lot of flops that most wouldnt likly have happened if alcohol wasnt involved. And broken parts happen even more so when a few beers inhance the stupid level a couple of notches:looser: People drink, people do stupid things its not rocket science.

Good lord, I go read Pirate for a bit and Nuzzy and Matt start making more sense than a ten dollar bill!!!

:D

This is good stuff, I should be drinking a beer :D

Agreed on all counts.

But who is being hurt beside's the driver's wallet in these instances? (apart from the freak injuries that could happen anytime one of these things takes place...)

Hey now...that extra stupid level induced by alcohol during wheeling makes it more entertaining to watch, kind of like drama & internet bbs's, they just seem to go well together for my amusement :flipoff:

Personally, Ive never drank while wheelin, but i have drank while on the trail, like when someones stuck and everyones sitting there BSing for hours..

personally I beleive that sipping one one or 2 is fine for woods wandering or like the powerline trail in Naches where it takes all day to go in and come out.. but serious ****faced drinking or even drinking til you have a good buzz going i dont really care for seeing out there, because its guarenteed thats the idiot thats gonna get hurt or better yet do something that gets him or others hurt.

BMI: its a bad example for kids, i dont need mine thinking that when theyre with thier friends they need to be drinking to have fun or be a part of:;

This is a STUPID argument. The reason the majority of the garbage is beer cans is becuase the majority of the people are beer drinking adults. Now if you and your type were out there all the time then there would be sucker wrapers laying all over the place:hi: . 80% of the people on the trail drink beer. If the roll was reversed and 80% were drinking soda then you would see mostly soda cans on the ground. I have only seen one group in my whole life of wheeling (30 years) that threw trash from their rigs

Those of you whom are so fricken up tight the sight of a beer on the trail makes you cringe you need to lighten up. Moderation is the key. If you see somone drunk on the trail thats a driver then thats a diffrent story.

Further more if you drive bye trash on the trail your just as bad as the guy that left it there. My wife gets tired bye the end of the day from jumping in and out of the Jeep to pick up trash all day long.

Its those fawking greeners, bastards are out in the woods dumping beer cans to make us good law abiding citizens look bad, at least you have the adocity to clean up after them, thanks Jimbo.

Nuzzy, Yes this is a freak story but we all have them (old guys) and they dont have to happen. As you said "could happen" So why not just prevent it by being smarter.

For an example, Once in my say "younger years" while wheeling with beer drinking buddies an entire weekend has been ruined for an entire group. Once in the middle of rimrock a drinking buddy tried a really stupid line that was way beyond his and his rigs ability. The result was a bad end over end and roll onto big rocks while his family watched since they were smart enough to get out. His young children 6/7 then got to watch as we extracted him from the jeep while trying to stop the bleeding from his head and left arm(rock came through the door and crushed it) They then got to watch as the helicopter took him away. He lost most of the use of that arm and the sight in his left eye and now his kids take care of him(he was a mechanic). His kids and wife were so traumatizesd(sp) that we had to walk them out of the woods because they wouldnt even get into anotheer jeep. Had he not been drinking he never would have tried what he did and his family would not have to suffer as they did. Add to the mix that 5 familys had their trip ruined and got to spend 3 days getting this jeep out of the woods instead of having a nice vacation as planned. We all also got to live with for several years Yea I would say others get hurt:booo:

I cant count the times when I have had to drag a drunks broken ass off the trail because they either rolled it or broke due to alcohol enhanced stupidity These events ruin everyones good times not just the drivers and they hurt the wallets as well. I dont spend my hard earned money to go wheeling just so I can haul out or fix some drunks rig. This sport is dangerous and expencive (carnage) enough without adding the cost of stupidity caused by drinking. When you have been doing this long enough you will start to see what I am talking about. Until then dont come wheeling with us if your drinking

I think this is another perfect testiment towards choosing who you wheel with. You're right! If I decide to go wheelin, I should choose my group to go with. Then we as a team take responsibility to get each other off the trail should something go wrong. No one else on the trail that day should have to take responsibility for us. If others happen upon us and want to help, perfect! But they should not feel like they HAVE to.

And btw Jim, this is all for the sake of good discussion. I would love to come wheel with you sometime, and will leave all the alcohol at home as I have no problems doing such a thing.:cool::cool:

I didnt mean to insinuate that everybody did it. But it doesnt matter. If some do it the effect is just the same.

there's a good combo.... snow/rain, long term exposure, cold weather, wet clothes and beer :corn:
