Good point. Another good point is drinking and driving is illegal.

The question posed was NOT about drinking and driving, but rather drinking and wheeling. And drinking and driving pertains to ROADS, not trails.... It is a rhetorically posed question. Not a legally posed question.

So then by your own quote, being "buzzed" in public is completely tolerable :Good:

And since I started this thread with 2 basic guidlines, one being that the topic was debating buzzed, NOT drunk...

We find ourselves with a negated argument :D :corn:

I only brought it up to show that driving drunk and rollerblading drunk can both get you into trouble. So yes, you can say that someone should not operate rollerblades while drinking. Same with running, skipping, or operating a pogo stick...

But you're right... "buzzed" rollerblading shouldn'tbe reason to go to jail and isn't within the framework of the thread... my bad.

Quite frankly, I think the debate here is the interpretation of what we all percieve as the grey area. For some of you, it is very black and white and that's perfectly acceptable. However, I KNOW there are MANY in the offroading community who do crack beers on the trail. They aren't neccesarily posting up because they don't feel the need to be badgered...

I would safely say half the wheelers I've met wouldn't think twice about having some beers on the trail from time to time...

You just gave me a great idea! We should have a buzzed rollerblading thread... with pics :clappy:

Remember the guy that got killed on the upper 311, he got pinned between two rigs,(I am not saying that alcohol was involved) Things like that happen to sober people, but if your not paying 100% attention, someone could die, I just don't think it is worth taking a chance on someone else's life.

Very true.

How about this... If someone wants to wheel with those who have been drinking, they must make the personal decision to do so. They know the possible repercutions that could result and must make their decision based on that knowledge. They are choosing to place themselves in that situation. Just as if I choose to bungie jump, mountain climb, or fly on a plane. We all know what CAN happen... So it then becomes our choice whether we place ourselves in such a situation. We have the ability to choose.

I don't see any difference in the 2. A ranger can just as easily site you for under the influence on a trail as they can on the road---Or am I way off base here...

In any case my LOGIC tells me not to do it...

But this has become a discussion of right vs. wrong, not legality.

As I said, I can be found in the woods drunk sitting in my Jeep with the keys in the glove box and get hauled to jail. That's because it's illegal, not because it's wrong.

If you would lile to argue about legality, then let's just all admit we speed every time we get into our cars and be done with it.

Yup. Most of our trails are also roads. Not all. But a good many of them. And yes you can get a DWI on many of them. But lets take the concept of a road out of the equation. A road has traffic. A trail, ergo wheeling, has NO traffic. Just you. And maybe the "rig" up ahead aways. You may not see a difference in them LEGALLY, but there is a difference. And YUP, logic does tell you not to do it. Logic tells me too. But I really don't have a reason for it other than 'it's a control thing'

I'd say I wheel totally sober about 90% of the time, ain't no time to drink, to much wheeling and pullin cable.
Now the other 10% of the time I have a couple beers, depending on the situation and type of folks I'm wheelin with.

Sloppy drunk is bad, half drunk is bad too, gee now that I think of it all the stupid situations I've been in have had alcohol involved. I suppose I shouldn't drink and whell, thanks guys!!

Carry on..

:D

Yep. Logic tells me it's not the smartest thing to do, but I also know I can handle it just fine as long as a) I don't drink much, and b) I'm not trying to do any hardcore trails.

But that's not what this is really about. This is about somebody else imposing their logic/beliefs/whatever on someone else.

And this gets to the heart of why I posted this thread

What is it that makes some ok with the idea while others are 100% against? I think it's fascinating how different people can be with how they perceive the world around them.

I don't think its how people "perceive" the world eric---why do some people like blue and others like green? WHy do some people like toyota's and some like jeeps?

i like to drink atleast a fifth of whiskey before driving ANYTIME, it keeps me between the lanes, and if i run out of gas, i can hook up a peice of garden hose, and blow into my throttle body, and the jeep will run !

Isn't that due to different perceptions?

Not at all, this is about safety.

1. It is a Fact that drinking impairs your judgement.
2. Operating a motor vehicle while impaired can be deadly.

It's not about you, it's about the people around you that you endanger by being impaired.

I don't think "logic" has as much to do with this as some may think.....
Society has successfully driven into the publics eye that drinking is bad. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong just that the average person automatically thinks "negative" when drinking is brought up. So the average person would have to think about it in order to use any logic but they don't get far enough to think about it at all, it's automatically bad. For people like this there is no logic involved.

And what makes you ASSume that when I drink a beer on the trail anybody is in any danger? You've never met me or wheeled with me, so you do not know what sort of groups I wheel with, or what sort of trails I wheel on, or anything.

It's a black and white issue for you, and it appears you have a personal reason for that. Fine. Don't drink and wheel, ever. That's your choice.

I on the other hand do not think it's black and white at all and I reserve the right to make my own decision on the matter, based on my own experience and abilities.

I guess I just meant that it's interesting how one person could could think nothing of one issue while another person considers it the biggest deal in the world, and yet the 2nd person could give little care to a different issue that the first person was passionate about...

:wtf: just happened here.... I swear I saw an articulately written answer from the Weif, and now it ain't here.

and for what it's worth, I thought it was a mature, well written, articulate.... well just damn thoughtful answer as to why we do what we do.
