from what i had heard on the news the dad had sucumed hypothermia. my guess would be be that dad gave up what he had to his son to keep warm enough to survive.

Ian said it looked like he may have froze to death... The boys core temp was 74-75* when found... Doctors said he didn't have much time left and was lucky that he was found so fast...
The dad may have made it it they would have stayed in the truck for shelter even with it flipped over...
The Forest Service spent the summer turning many of the trails into gravel roads. If I did not know better I'd see the entrance of the lower 311 and think it was a road. If the trails were still difficult and made of dirt he most likely would have gotten out and hiked into the trail a piece to investigate. This would have no doubt left him turning around and seeking another way out. Instead he saw what probably looked to him like nothing more than an interesting gravel road and into the trail he went.
How often do we hear of someone mistakenly driving their clean F-250 into the Busy? If we continue to harden and simplify ORV trails these kinds of accidents are going to become far more frequent.
Very sad to hear this happened. :booo:
Regardless if the guy was alone, not being smart, the FS caused this or anything of that nature--the end result is its just ANOTHER black eye on our sport/hobby that can be used against us wether its the greenies or our very own government.....
Sucks from any prospective....
I am really not concerned about incidents like this giving us a "black eye" as I am about issues like mudding and such where people are going out and doing intentional damage and running off trail and such. Deaths happen every day in the hiking and skiing and climbing world and theres no threat to close it down. I just dont see it as much of a threat although we almost lost all of our access to DNR lands a few years back due to a lawsuit from a idiot on a motorbike :eeek: (beverly dunes)
Negative is negaitve.... I don't care what it is...
This is very sad.
However this is not a four-wheeling fatality. This is a poor weather fatality. Going out into a cold, wet, damp environment while unprepared or underprepared (whether alone or in a group) is stoopid.
Any beer cans in the rig?
I think it's wierd that there is service where this happened. I only get enough service to get a text, if I'm lucky, in a whole day.
