my 85's tranny is pretty noisy. I bought it thinking it was just a throw out bearing because the noise goes away when I push the clutch in but I just finished replacing it and it still makes the same noise. by the amount of oil caked underneath I'm guessing it was run low and wore **** out inside. I'm just going to run it like it is and wait for it to blow up I guess unless anyone has any ideas of something else that may be the issue.

*brand new throw out bearing and clutch were just installed and I put a quart of 80-90w in the tranny.

Yep....it's the trans. Had an '87 Runner that was very noisy, but drove it for @ a year before selling it, and it was going fine with it's next owner.
I'd just check the oil level and run it till she starts poppin' outta gear...:D

input shaft bearing. pretty easy to change...when the trans is out.

or so i would think...never actually changed one on THAT trans.

IS there someone local to the Seattle Everett area that rebuilds these for a reasonable rate?

Like someone who does or used to work at a trany shop that would do one on the side?
