Project Rusty, turning a rusty turd into a slightly less rusty turd...

Hi all,

Great thread hlb3! Surprised I had not seen it before!

It is good to see an old FJ40 out on the trails; I had my '74 up at Walker Valley yesterday! :D

Regards,

Alan

Nice. I'd like to swap some 60 axles into mine in the future too, then I wouldn't have to deal with running wheel spacers.

You're right though, they are never truly done.

Wow, I forgot about this thread...Looks good Les---
Whatever happened to the Sami? Is it still around?

Sold it back to my dad. :redneck: Its sitting out back, waiting for me to do a spring over with stock springs on it to ditch the chitty stiff lift springs. It will find its way down to AZ to my parents retirement place in about a year and half.

Was just flipping through this cuz I was bored, and saw this. Think the Sami is a little over-due. :corn:

Looks like some stuff out of the back of the Cruiser...

Haha, I'm sure there are a few things the dirt is probably holding on there. :redneck: I did vacuum the back of it out today though.

Hi all,

Man, that all looks familiar! :haha:

I was out in the garage this afternoon preparing my FJ40 for a clutch swap after the trip to the BusyWild 2 weeks ago! :redneck:

Regards,

Alan

Yeah, she is very excited. The seat was a little on the pricey side, but the piece of mind is worth the extra money. I found some cheapo kids seats that were like $80 cheaper, but on top of not being a high quality seat, they were smaller. Since this one is bigger and will last longer, it should be cheaper in the long run. I also have a brand new Crow 2" Junior 5-point harness on its way.

I decided to upgrade my seats as well. I'm 6'5" and my old seats were made for somebody about a foot shorter. The top of the headrest hit me about half way up my neck and the harness slot was about right in the bottom of my shoulder blades. If I had a bad rollover, it would probably break my spine. So I picked up a set of brand new PRP Comp Highbacks from Nick and sold the El cheapo JC Whitney seats at the swap meet. My head actually hits the headrest on the PRPs and the harness slot is actually at the same level as my shoulders, so it will be much safer now.

I also picked up my bender from Rogue at the swap meet. I got it all welded together and put a coat of paint on it last night, so I'll be assembling it tonight. I also got a metal brake for my HF shop press from Swag, so that should come in handy as well. I'm probably going to start bending tube on Sunday.

Woah daddy warbucks making it rain all over WA with the cash! Looks like we both will have significant progress on both of our rigs over the next two weekends. As always I am looking forward to see how it all comes together. :awesomework:

Haha, gotta love tax returns. :redneck:

Assuming I don't run into any unexpected surprises or come up with any more side projects (which usually happens), I'm hoping to have a majority of the work done by the end of the month.

After this project is done, I've got a few more things planned to do over the next year or so. After I buy a whole bunch of tube I will finally make some kind of a tube door for it, I'm going to replace the destroyed rockers with some boat sides, build a grill hoop (like what Metal-tech sells) and tie it into the hoop foe my winch and run bars from the grill hoop back to the cage.

So spent some time.out in the shop today and made some decent progress. So first off, here are my new toys, Swag 12-ton press brake and a Rogue Fab bender.

I got the rear halo and supports in. In the first two pics I have the seats sitting on blocks test fitting them.

I had to cut out the original cross bar out to make room for the seat. It worked out well that the old tube I cut out was 2", so I was able to slide the 1.75" tube inside the 4" or so I left. I'll be running some tabs off this bar to mount the front of Leia's seat to.

Made some more progress. Got the side bars in and I got the cross bar in that the seat frame will hang off of. I also got the front tabs for Leia's seat welded on. Leia's harness also showed up today too.
