pulling codes--88 GMC P/U

1988 GMC 3500 SRW 2wd pickup with the 454. my dad was driving it today, it died, wouldnt start, so he got it towed home. i got it started just now, and the service engine light is on, and i need to know how to pull the codes. i will be doing a full tune up on it tomorrow (cap/rotor/wires/plugs/probably fuel filter).

well, i let it warm up a bit, pulled it into the garage, it died twice on the way, both times had to hold the gas pedal to the floor to get it to start, and it was blowing lots of black smoke. pulled a plug, and i dont think i have seen a dirtier spark plug in my life. tried to start it to back it out of the garage, and i could only get it running for 15-20 seconds at a time, and it sounded like it was only hitting on 4 or 5 cylinders. so i will be doing the tune up for sure tomorrow, but i would still like to pull the codes and see what they are. anyone know how?
