The man in brown left a couple packages on my doorstep. They arrived much sooner than expected.

Not much got done this weekend. I did manage to disassemble the front and rear 3rds and get them cleaned up. I also sourced the remaining parts for my power steering conversion, as well as an electrical upgrade.

:looser:

Tonight I cleaned up the 77 front axle and cut the knuckle gussets I had tacked onto the other axle off. Keep in mind that the hole in the gusset is for the lower shock bolt, also another gusset gets welded to the bottom side of the knuckle ball Then cut the shock mounts off the new axle and decided to try my hand at making some diff armor.

watching Chris cut that 3/16" with a cutting disc = :corn:

1.) No Plasma cutter to be found, or funds to purchase.
2.) 3/16 scrap is all we have laying around, your welcome
3.) It wasn't going to jump off the floor and cut itself
4.) It will be more entertaining watching me heat it up and bend it than the cutting. Their was not a safe place to hide from sparks in the 4 car garage while I was cutting.

I would have paid for the :corn: to watch Kyle grocery shop on one leg though. :swing:

Hey bud, make sure you get those gussets/shock mounts oriented correctly if you want your shocks to be straight up and down. I welded mine centered on the trunion opening and the gussets/shock mounts lean back slightly. It may be because I am sprung over with a cut and turn but I would think the knuckles are rotated back on the stock housings as well. Just a thought.

Agreed, the plan is to just tac them on until I get my Bilstein 5125's ( Thanks Craig ) and get the upper shock mount tacked in and the entire frame sitting on it wheels. It wont have the engine/trans/xfer case/tub weight on it but I should be able to get the shocks lined up close to right. Any other suggestions that I should think about in regards to getting the shock alignment right?

You are on the right track with tacking them in place then getting the weight on there prior to finish welding. If you have aftermarket springs, they won't sag much. Also, put the sweepers with retaining rings on and check for clearance from lock to lock between the gusset and the knuckle.

Good call with the sweepers and retaining rings Lane. :awesomework:

77 FJ40 Front diff. New NITRO 4:88 ring and pinion with ARB install. This is my first time ever doing gears and before I call it good a second and yes maybe third, fourth, fifth etc opinions would make me feel better. First pic is drive, second is coast, last is just cause I took it.

21 Circuit EZ Wiring Harness, and the remainder of my powersteering components from a Vendor on IH8MUD came in the mail today. Going to button up the front diff this weekend and start the knuckle rebuild on it. Dropped of the rear diff with gears and ARB Air Locker..going to cost me about $300 for the labor. After these axles get done is where all of this is going to get interesting.

Boat anchor has the steering stops reenforced, the bottom is all gusseted up, the top gusset is just tacked in place until I get it under the frame and line up the ford shock mounts. Boring typical Toyota stuff, but Kyle said I was slacking on my posts and my web wheeling bolt on shenanigan's.

Put in a really solid days worth of work in yesterday.

Front: Ford shock towers are tac'd in until it is sitting on full weight. 14 inch 5125's for the front are a tad bit to long so I am going to move the lower shock mount to either the front or back side of the axle. Once I get that all good to go I will brace the back side of the shock towers to the frame. All of the front axle parts are cleaned and painted with the exception of the rotors which I am taking in to get turned.

Rear: Tac'd in the rear Trail Gear shackle hangers and hung the leafs. Mounted the JT Outfiitters rear disk brake brackets and cleaned up the rear axle shafts. Put a couple bolts in the super sexy Nitro diff cover just for the pic.

Next up: Install the front and rear thirds and button up the rear axle then the front. I have 10 inch Bilstein 5125's on order. Once those get here I can tac in the upper and lower Trail gear shock mounts. Then its time to make it a roller.

I forget if you are installing Long's in the front Chris. If you are now or plan to in the future, now is the time to clearance the inside of the knuckle balls.

Cannot afford the longs right now. But doing the clearance mod right now is actually a pretty damn good idea, before it gets all packed in grease.
