I have a brand new Trail Gear TC style pump 1650 psi on my 22R Toyota motor with their orbital and double end ram on a Dana 60 front the problem I'm having is at idle I have little or no steering until you idle the engine up then the steering comes back the pump whines like its starving for fluid I have the reservoir mounted above the pump and I'm running Royal Purple synthetic in it what they recommend It is running Thur a cooler and its not hot you can touch the reservoir with your bare hand I can remove the cap on the reservoir and its circulating like crazy no bubbles or foaming but as soon as you touch the steering wheel to turn it right or left the fluid stops circulating but will still turn as long as you are not cycling the wheel right to left fast like if you were in rocks or something trying to get the tires to bite if that makes sense its almost like if the pump had a smaller pulley on it to turn faster would help
Any you guys using this pump got any idea or have heard from anyone that has had this same problem

Re: Re: Trail Gear TC style steering pump ?

Relief valve may be stuck in the pump. Or the pump may just be bad.

Make sure the belt is really damn tight. They will slip at idle on the aluminum pulley but not squeal... Most common issue I've seen

I put one on my old 4 runner buggy, no problems with it for several years.

Belt is pretty tight already checked that. Any way to know for sure on the relief valve ? I have another brand new pump just like it never been run it that belongs to a friend just hate to change it out if its something im over looking was causing the problem but looks like thats what im gonna have to do to know for sure

what kind of resivor do you got it must be well vented i made one at work it did not have any problems first couple rides then started doing same thing it burned the pump up i called trail gear sent it back they gave new one no problems. i ended up just lengthing factory toy resivor with ehx pipe and works great now.

Hmm im not sure the brand its not one from Trail Gear its aluminum can type looks like most I have seen got a rubber gasket on the lid seals pretty tight Is the lid suppose to have a vent tube in it ?

He is correct the resvoir that TG sells is not vented mine looks just like the one they sell . Well my problem turned out to be a bad pump or something internal with it at the time of purchase I bought two pumps one was mine and the other for a buddy he has never installed it on his buggy so I got it and swapped it out now it turns like its suppose too called TG this morning and they said they would need to check the pump before they could determine what they would do about making it up I hope I dont have trouble with them over this thing about it is it works or it dont no in between to me

After doing a little research the only one I have seen that is vented is a PSC

there is alot info out there on this. from what i understand there has to some way for pressure to release from a pressurized system if the reservoir is sealed the cap it still must release pressure when overfilled or air trapped in lines. maybe your sealed cap is bad. read some of these may change your mind. i know i had better luck with a vented reservoir. if resivor is not from trail gear maybe not desgin for what your using it for. i m just tryin to throw some options out there for causing pump to bad.

Speaking of station....where has that snot nosed young whipper snapper been? Haven't heard from him in several years... boy knows his hydro!

I have talked to psc about this before, the reservoir trail mart sells does not have a vent and from what psc told me is junk. The pump will burn up without having any kind of a vent. I have had several friends with this problem and all run a psc reservoir. :dblthumb:
