Punta Cana Vacation Excursions?

We do at least one 7 day "All Inclusive" in Playa Del Carmen every year, we use to always throw a 5 day in during the spring some where also, Playa, Jamaica, Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta, have not done the spring trip the last couple of years, life has gotten in the way, we will be back on track this year though. Like Jesse, working for Delta has benefits. I am so ready for open bar, lots of food and nights I can't remember. :dblthumb:

Lol! And we flashback to Super troopers once again.

Is the food good at these places? I'm not super picky, but my buddy stressed that i better really like real seafood and a lot of it? He stayed at Breathless Punta Cana.

It varies, we have stayed at some resorts that the food was just OK, the resort we stay at now-food is one of the main reasons this is our 4th year. I have never stayed at a resort that I didn't find food I liked at one of their restaurants. but I can say that at even some of the better resorts, if there is a McDonalds or Burger King not far away, one night I will get me some. Last September on our last night, us and a two other couples that return on the same week every year had Domino's delivered to the Lobby bar.

My first flight experience was with American. We were delayed 9 hours and not so much as a free beer. I complained A LOT afterward and still nothing. **** AMERICAN AIRLINES. Turned a 3 day weekend into a two day weekend. ****ers.

And I hope I don't go bananas being gone for 10 days, but time will tell.

We went to Playa del Carmen last August and stayed at the Royal. It was a block from 5th which is the market, so we were right at all the shopping, bars, and restaurants in town. We had never really left Texas, so we went through a travel agent. It was around $4000 for flights, taxis, gratuities, and resort. Ours was adults only and next door to their kids allowed resort. That allowed us 7 restaurants at ours, and another 4 at theirs. We were so excited and couldn't wait, but now I honestly don't think we'd even consider it again.

Our airport pick up that was booked didn't look for us, we had to find them which took almost an hour. The poolside service closed at 6, and all outside bars/pool closed at 8. 4 of the restaurants were a buffet, and the other 3 only served a couple items. They were all French or Italian infused, not regular local Mexican food. After a day or two we ended up going into town to eat, and we aren't drinkers either. So the all inclusive part was wasted money we could have spent elsewhere.

We had never been, so we thought we were special when they told us we were platinum members. They insisted on taking us to dinner and explaining it's benefits. They ended up trying to sell us a time share, and just kept sending someone else to speak with us or trash talking us when we weren't interested. The manager literally said "what kind of parent doesn't want to take their kids on a vacation?" We complained to the travel agent when we got back, and she acted like it was normal and we should've known better.

We booked our excursions through the resort which was bleh. They sold us a 12 person English speaking tour to Chichen Itza, with all included food and drinks. Ended up on a loaded down bus with a stale bologna sandwich and room temperature orange juice. The tour guide barely spoke English and if you got more than 30' from him your headset didn't work. We should have just grabbed a taxi and went by ourselves, as we ended up walking around without him after a while.

We went up and down the beach as far as we could walk in both Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Both beaches couldn't have sucked worse. There was a 2' tall 4' wide mound of seaweed as far as you could see on every beach we found. All of them were full of sharp rocks, so they were unusable. We quickly figured out why everyone just stayed in the pool.

The cenotes were pretty neat, as well as snorkeling the reefs. We enjoyed riding the catamaran and swimming with dolphins. My wife is messcan, and even she refuses to ever go back to Mexico. We did hear Isle de Mujures is gorgeous, we just ran out of time trying to get there.

We went on a 7 day cruise from New Orleans in Jan to Cozumel, Roatan, Belize, and Costa Maya. The beaches in Cozumel were the same as in August and so were the ones in Costa Maya. Roatan and Belize was exactly as pictured. Beautiful beaches and breathtaking views everywhere. The cruise was $429 a person for an interior room. The only downfall was waking up not knowing if it was daylight or dark without looking for a clock. If you get a window room check the floor, as the ones on the 8th floor got a beautiful view of a lifeboat for 7 days. They charged 18% gratuity for everything, and $13-15 per day per person as a tip for housecleaning. We had maybe 6 drinks a piece the entire 7 days so a drink package wasn't worth it for us. We went to the store in Cozumel and picked up snacks and drinks for our room after we found out we could bring on anything but alcohol.

I can't say we liked one better than the other after doing both. We were worried about only having 8 hours in port on the ship. But we had to wake up by 530-6 every morning at the hotel to ear breakfast and be ready for the 7am excursion pickup, so it really wasn't much difference there. The only land based benefit was being able to walk around town when we got back. We met a couple that stayed in a regular hotel for 2 weeks, and booked their own flights and excursions for $2000. For someone who doesn't drink much, and wants to enjoy local cuisine that's probably a better route.

Cozumel

Roatan, Honduras

We actually love the Royal Playa, this is our 4th year, never ever been approached about buying up to platinum status.

I see everyone is in the pool...

Unfortunately we didn't get the balcony suite we were sold by our travel agent, this was our view.

We weren't allowed to eat in the restaurant to the right on the beach without my wife changing out of her cover up, but could at the reservation only steak house across the street which didn't make much sense. The Asian place in front was nice, but you can or eat the same meal so many times in a week. Maybe the travel agent over sold it, or we over paid. I hoped when we asked for a beautiful beach view, it was usable.

This Greek place had killer pizza

This place had great pastor

Don't take this the wrong way....but traveling out of the country isn't for everyone, cruising or destination vacation. Just cause you're going to Mexico, Bahamas, etc doesn't mean an all inclusive resort is gonna be "authentic " Mexican, blah blah blah. They're not gonna speak perfect English...Hell, I dont! Gotta remember that we're in their country not ours. They're trying to cater to people from all over the world and provide different culinary experiences for everyone. Always double check your accomadations as far as "views", big difference in ocean view and ocean front at most resorts, garden view may also include parking lot in some instances. View your room layout before booking. All inclusive is awesome if ya like to drink and you're gonna save money versus paying out of pocket for your meals. We always book our own vacations, never used a travel agent... just do your homework. I love traveling to different countries and hope to do more in the future since I'm gettin' kinda old!

Not taken wrong at all, we considered it was a learning experience. Our cruise had downfalls too, but that was because we didn't know what we were doing there either. Out of 2000 people, maybe 150 were under 70. They catered all entertainment to the seniors, and most of the ship was closed at 9pm. We asked around and learned about looking into the size of the ship, along with the age of the ship. Obviously the newer ships will probably have the newest upgrades than an older one. We didn't want to be surrounded by kids so we went Norwegian, but were told Carnival would be closer to our age group. We were also advised to stay around the Virginia islands, Mediterranean Sea, or alsaka for the best cruises.

Found a good deal at the Holiday inn resort in Panama City on the beach. We stayed there on our senior trip years ago, but they have majorly upgraded the place since. Big pool with waterfall, outdoor tiki bar and grill, deck with billiard tables by the beach, cabanas for rent on the beach, nice indoor gourmet restaurant, etc. We can spend 5 nights there for what it costs us to spend 4 nights on cruise ship (right at $1k). I realize food is free on cruise and amounts to some savings there, but I'd also be saving the $300 in alcohol costs and just buying a couple cases of cheap beer to drink on the beach / at hotel. I'm having 2nd thoughts about a cruise, not sure if I'll enjoy it the whole time. There's a lot to do in Panama, but I wonder if it will be crawling with party animals around the time we will be there. We are getting married on April 29th, then plan to honeymoon from April 30-May 5th or so. That's after spring break and before school is out, so I think that might be a decent time down there? Idk...

Really just looking at different options that cost around the same money.

Costa Rica- Playa Conchal is as affordable as any of them and is awesome as well. Been to both and done that and drank the coconut drinks and bought the Penicillin shots to prove it. Great times either place, just an option you were looking for. :dblthumb:

Which resort? Westin looks nice! But looks like $176 per person per night without airfare, which is on par with Punta Cana costs, unless there are better prices to be found. Only done a brief search.

Spring breakers are normally late March to early April. You should be good there.

I had that view our first time, it was the year that they were putting in the room front pools, it really sucked, the dive pool is just to the right of your room. Since then we have became friends with the "Romance Concierge" , Willamina gets us great rooms!

We just got back from Punta Cana. I highly recommend going, if you haven't been. Place is awesome!

Without starting a new thread, here is where I am. Wife is turning 40 end of Nov. Is Dec1ish a good time to go caribbean? Good weather? I've talked to 2 agents, they both shot me Cancun and Puerto Vallarta and one also had Punta Cana in there.
Prices for a 4 night are comparable, $1500 to 1800 all inclusive with flights. All in 4 plus rated places.
PV:
Riu Vallarta
Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta
Riu Palace Pacifico
Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta
Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta

Cancun:
Ocean Coral & Turquesa
Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda

Punta Cana:
Riu Palace Punta Cana
Grand Palladium Palace Resort Spa & Casino
Ocean Blue & Sand

I guess I should call back and see if the Hurricane ass F'd any of the places bad enough to avoid.

About us. She is not a big drinker. At all. She's scared of risk of about any kind, so sightseeing would be good, adventure not as much. She does love to swim. I doubt we get off property much, she will be scared, and I will be uncomfortable. I don't go places for the most part. I go wheel or race or work at home in the shop or on the farm. I'm not out and about interacting with random humans.
I enjoy drinking socially, often to some excess when its with a buddy and we are having a good time. When she and I are together about 3 drinks in I can feel her scrutiny through body language. When we dated we lived at my buddy's bar, she drank whiskey and we went home and had sex. We don't do either of those anymore laughing1. She has a very stressful job, owns a wedding venue and deals with dumbass brides and no respect high school employees all year. She just wants to get away. I'd rather go wheel in Colorado, but I'm doing this for her 40th. I would see us doing some swimming, maybe with some marine life type adventure, maybe a hike here or there, if there is a jungle, cool mountain, something to look at from a jeep, might do that. Hopefully she will have a few drinks each day and relax a little.

Any of this sounding like any of the places I've listed? Anybody been to any of them? Vallarta sounds the cheapest but is it a shithole/not a cool place/ etc. It's pacific side, The others are gulf side or in the gulf. Is Playa that much better that I should spend more and go there? It looks to be right by Cancun.

Thanks in advice for any advice
