New Crash compound

lookin like a nice shop! if any of that barn wood is straight and rott free, save it! i burned a bunch of old wood when i got my place only to realize later i had made a mistake, going into some of these new custome homes and seeing salvaged barn wood used for trim, wall treatments and whanot. maybe your already on to that... just a heads up, i kinda skim through your post quickly but love the pics so far.:beer:

I went thru all the stuff I tore down and saved what was good. I have some repairs to do on the north wall and plan on using some of the wood in that spot.

I have been spending every spare second and making some progress.

So I had planned on buying metal gates for the stalls but my wife said she really wanted to resuse the wood gate. Since I shored up the area where the gate sits I will need to trim it a bit.

So since we had one gate my daughter wanted a second one. I built a new gate out of the old wood from the feeder so it has that rustic look :redneck:

Since I can't cut a straight line to save my life with a skill saw--this helped a ton :redneck:. Funny thing is I had it stored away and forgot about it from my dads stuff.

This wall needs redone and I had planned on replacing it but my little girl had asked if I could reuse the wood and rebuild it.

My little girl got some staining done on a couple walls.

And the last walls done I got done today.

And got these 2 walls pressure washed. I can't believe how well they cleaned up. I was afraid I might blow the wood apart but they held up great.

So tommorow I got to get all the old wood finished cutting up and hauled to the drink around the fire location :redneck: and get the floors pressure washed and then start the feeders. Since the wife went and pickup up the horse with my sister and its at her place time is getting short.

I'm at my in laws this weekend still and I showed him your progress and he said to keep at it because you'll love it when you're done! He lives in a 120+ year old barn in Eastern WA.

So I scavenged thru the last of the feeder wood and fixed up the 2 small walls since one wall had no boards on it. One thing I love about this place almost all the boards are the same width/thickness so it was a cinch to get them to fit and look the same but that ended what I had left over.

I pressure washed the floor finally and the 3 walls outside the stalls. I had not really noticed how much of that mossy covering there was on the floor until I blew it all off. I was a soaking mess by the time I was done :haha:

But boy did it look good when I was done and a couple days of drying and all of it is ready for stain.

One of the last things to do are the feeders. I had a rough idea of what I wanted and I can't believe how good they turned out. I made the outer board easily replaceable since I figure the horse will probably wanna use it as a chew toy :haha: But I got one done and the other almost done. So tomorrow I will get it done and then start hanging the gates and getting and idea how I wanna do the mid fence on the beams I did.

Luckily I have a couple good saws in the shop because if I cut them with my skill saw--not so straight :haha:

Here is a funny concerning that fresh wood smell. So the base boards are 8" wide cedar since they will handle moisture better and the wife goes "crap if we stain them that wonderful cedar smell will be gone"... "honey its going to smell like horse **** here soon--I don't think the cedar smell will survive" :haha:

I got the one gate cut down and both hung with locking latches. Originally the one gate only had 2 hinges but I went ahead and used 3 per gate since they are not exactly light.

I got both grain buckets mounts done(will hang them after staining is done). I actually did the short wall openings for this reason so the wife can easily pour the grain into the bucket easily.

I got a good start on the mid fence that utilizes the support beams I put in. At the end there will be a gate so the wife can take the horse out of the barn easily.

I got the mid fence all done. I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

So next I need to add a gate and extend a wall a tad to meet the gate. Luckily I had this one laying around at home and was perfect. Behind the gate is where the tack area will be. I also used a Speedco latch for the gate--what a nice unit it is. I went with the one way (that also have 2 way that lets the gate latch and open the other way). So thats off my list.

Last area that has not been cleaned. I had the kids drag the old drafting desk's out and put into the metal pile. Its been a long time since that cement has seen the light of day. The one slab with no covering is definitely showing its age.

I was originally going to just kinda patch the wall where the tack area is(and leave the wash side alone). After looking at it closely the base board was almost gone and there was like 3 layers of plywood and only a few studs. I said screw it and blew it out. My little girl came out to stain and stopped and just stared at the big open hole--kinda funny.
