Reiter Stories

When I first got my dual cases I thought I could crawl up anything. Tried the middle line going up the rock wall one afternoon with my buddy, Luke Wrysch. Things were looking good and we were laughing as we inched our way up. Then the front end slid to the left and all I could hear was our histerical laughter as we rolled down the rock face and Luke yelling "gun it, gun it!" hoping we could some how drive out of the roll. We didn't, but we did land back on our wheels at the bottum. Weird watching the rocks under you suddeny spinning over top of you and across my stinger. We laughed till we cried, stoked and relieved that we were OK. Even drove it out under it's own power, with the motor sitting crooked thanks to a broken motor mount, bent rear axle shaft, cracked frame, hole in my radiator, non of that mattered to us, we had a good story to tell. One of many :D

1991 A bunch of guys from Les schwan decided to go wheelin up at Reiter at the end of November.
I had an 83 toy with 38s and a lot of lift. I think the top of the cab was 8

The first time I went to Reiter there were, I think, four or five of us. I can remember 4, but something tells me there were five.

There were for sure 2 Mitsubishi Monteros, an Isuzu P'up, and my Isuzu Trooper. None of us had ever been there and didn't have a clue where we were going. We headed out from the lower parking lot on what turned out to be either a quad trail or a single track, but in either case we didn't really fit, but somehow managed to eventually make it through to the powerline and then to Isabel. We all made it to the bridge and then turned around.

The only damage was a lost license plate that somehow came loose in the water crossing and we watched it disappear downstream.

Man I swear I must be one of those lucky guys to always find those unlucky folks :haha:

So tonight I am heading to the lower lot. I shot up the poop chute which BTW was snotty and fun. I get to the Y (where the left goes to the top of the stairstep and right to the road). And here was this kid in a "full size dodge" with his buddy in a stockish YJ:haha: and the dodge was stuck going dowhill on the rocks near the Y. So I pull up and one kid comes up and says he is stuck on a rock at his t-case. I get out and walk up and ask "do you know where this goes" "nope first time I have been down this road". Now this particular spot with a rig of that nature(open open) is just screwed. SO I tell him I can get him unstuck but he's kinda screwed now. So I pull him off and get out and explain to him that he is in a pickle. "can I go down that way" pointing at the left road to the top of the stair step. I tell him I don't even like going down that way--should have seen the look :haha:.

So I tell him the only way out (I would not be able to winch that big pig back up where he came and it was getting dark and raining) was down a steep trail or it was "its pretty damn steep and rocky". But I tell him to follow me and look at it.

So I zoom over to it and wait. he pulls up and looks at it and I explain to him how to do and what to expect. So he comes down it listening to me and one his passenger tire is past the large rock he turning it--and :haha: his body slides onto the big rock turning his rocker and door--well lets just say his door probably won't open. And at that same time all 4 tires are now off the ground. So I was able to rock the back of the rig--and you should hear the nasty sheetmetal noise as it slides off the rock with the front tires on the ground. He was able to drive it down the rest of the way. Damn I wish I could have figured out how to take video with my new phone :haha:

And people laugh at my UHMW skids.... Those two spots are about the only places I haven't taken damage. You did tell him we call it the Poop Chute right? :haha:

Whats funny?

Granted it's been years since I had been out there, but one time at night in the rain I was given the choice of poop chute or down the stair steps.

I actually prefer stair steps. :haha:

You stated--"been years" You really don't know :haha:

How much worse has stair steps gotten?

I remember poop chute in it's early days having one hell of a rear tire picking drop off.

I will give you $20 if you go down the strair step :haha:

Poop chute :haha: They are different animals now....

My story starts with myself my buddies Todd and Jesse each with our Polaris RZR's decide we should see the Index Wall. I had never been there and only knew that we had to walk in when we got to the cable barrier. So we make it in a ways before I hit some of the really nasty mudbog and I sink to the tops of the tires. I'm wearing Romeos and white socks and manage to stop sinking before it comes into the cab. Todd has a winch on the front of his so I have him pull up on some still decent ground behind me. I crawl out the back and lay on the little bed reaching for his winch. I get both hands on his hood and just stretched as far as I can when he slams into reverse and I go for a full Mudbath :tool:. I then walked over and hooked up the winch.... And plotted my Revenge!

Ok, heres my story....

One day (about a year ago) I had the urge to go wheel in the middle of the week and none of my wheelin buddies could go because they had to work so I called a friend (who didnt have a rig) to go along for an early afternoon run.

We got there and unloaded in the lower lot and proceded straight to Stair Step. Got over that easily and headed towards Poop Chute and found that the large rock that was sticking out of the left side at the top had dislodged and was sitting right in the middle after the drop off. Didnt look safe so we turned around and headed back to the "Y" and was going to go around to Sac Up when all of a sudden, I decided to go down Stair Step as I had never done that before. Got down towards the bottom of the upper section (where that big rock is that alot of ppl catch on the right side when going up) and all was good until the right front started going up the big slab. I felt the right rear pick and immediately felt uneasy about continuing. Last thing I wanted was to flop it against the big rock on the left or worse, roll down the hill without anyone there to help me so I decided it wasnt worth the risk. As I started to reverse out of the predicament I was in, I heard a loud pop and all of a sudden I wasnt going backwards anymore.....instead I started rolling back down towards the bottom and the right front started up the slab and we were about to pick the right rear again. Thats when I hit the brakes and let the rig settle at the bottom. Once I felt it wasnt going anywhere, we jumped out of the rig to assess the situation.

We couldnt find anything that broke and caused the loud pop and so I determined whatever broke was internal and it didnt look good. I jumped back in the rig and ran the shifters thru the gears, first the tranny, then the crawl box and finally the t-case. I started it up and tried to reverse it again but still nothing (was like it was in neutral). We were fooked....out there in the afternoon, in the middle of the week all alone with no other wheelers in sight so I called a buddy who was just getting off of work to see if he could come out and help me. Mind you, he works in Everett and lives in Marysville so we were going to have to wait a while before he got there. About an hour and a half later, I get a call from him telling me that he was on his way but he suggested I try something while we were waiting. So I jump back into the rig and guess what? It doesnt start. Because of the fuel cell that I run is a drag race style with a rear sump, and because we were sitting at a pretty steep downhill decline, the pickup wasnt getting any fuel so I immediately call my buddy who was already on his way to bring some gas with him. Fortunately he had a 5 gal gas can in his truck and so he stopped to fill it up.

By the time he rolled up stair step to where we were stuck, it was starting to get dark. We quickly assessed the situation and topped off my fuel. We then hooked up his winch line up above us to the right and around a tree (yes we used the proper treesaver/snatch block setup) and back down to my roll cage to keep me from floppin and I ran my winch line to the front of his truck. I started pulling in my line as he kept his line tight and was able to crawl up and over safely.

Once on flat ground, I decided to try running thru the gears again just to see if we could figure out what broke. To my surprise, the rig would go in foward but not reverse and only without the crawl box in low which told me something let loose in the crawl box. I was then able to drive back down the the lower lot and right onto my trailer.

The next day I pulled the dual cases out and took the crawl box apart. To my amazement, the lower gear had stripped out and the reason it did was because the smaller thin roller bearing on the rear of the lower shaft wasnt there!!! Thats right, whoever put this thing together 7 years ago never bothered to take that bearing out of the donor t-case and put it in the dualcase adaptor.   I was impressed that it stayed together for so long without that bearing, but if you think about it, when going forward, that lower gear wants to move towards the upper gear keeping the gears engaged. Its only when going in reverse and the crawl box is in low that the gears want to separate. It then dawned on me that I rarely if ever drove in low low and in reverse at the same time....otherwise Im sure it would have happened way sooner. Good damn thing too because the weekend prior to this happening, I was in Naches wheelin over the weekend and it would have really sucked if I broke there.

Moral of this story, never go wheelin alone....

Also want to thank that buddy who came to my rescue. MarkM and Stu both know him as well as some of the others here at NWW. His name is Tom. :awesomework:

A few years back my buddies and I decided we would go wheeling on a saturday evening up at Reiter (lifted early 90's Nissan truck SAS on 35 boggers and my XJ on 33's before it had lockers or a cage). So we hit up the powerline trails and some of the fun mud stuff and then since we were super smart we decided to run the wall trail and head out the Index Wall since it was getting dark so we could hike up with the girls we brought to the top. We do that then coming back through the tank trap my buddy tells me he can't steer his truck. Well crap I turn around and we see that his drag link broke at the TRE. Since we had been wheeling for 3 months a piece we had few tools, and no spare parts. At this point it was getting towards 1 am and their was nobody else up there. We shuffle everyone into my XJ and take them home with the plan of welding the drag link back together in the middle of the tank trap.:haha: I never said we were thinking straight back then. So after we get everyone home at about 3 or 4 am we head off to bed and plan to grab our welding buddy at 5 am or so and head back out there. Once we woke up we decided it would be easier to just pull the drag link and weld it at his house (never thought to head to schucks and get a new TRE). By the time we got the TRE and drag link pulled it was pushing 8am, so back to monroe so my buddy can weld the drag link and then back to the tank trap to put it back together. We were finally rolling out of there by 11 am or so. It was a great time and I learned to never go wheeling without spare parts again.:D

I remember takin my 93 long bed f150 up the isabelle trail before it got washed quite a few years ago, I got a call from a buddy of mine at like 9:30pm an was like I need help an ur the only person i know with a full size rig:;...anyhow, he had his bronco stuck just off the trail cuz he busted his steerin knuckle...anyhow,after tryin to pull him up with my truck an failed, we tryed to hook up 3 yotas an a s-10 blazer to make a kinda train....we still couldnt get it unstuck....by about 4am we said screw it...syphoned all the gas out an threw the tires in the bed of my truck an went home...:awesomework: that was a sad sad day

I remember when the rocks stuck a foot out of dirt on the stair step. And when the poop shoot was a brand new line for dirtbikes.

my first time out to Reiter was in late Sept or early Oct of 2000. i had traded a coworker my 88 Dakota 4x for his 2wd burban in june of that year. ended up totaling the 'burban, dont ask long story, and got my current 87 cherokee. now this thing was BONE STOCK. even had Michelin X radials on it.

so my coworker tells me at work that hes stuck out in a mud pit and he needs a 2nd set of hands to help him out wiht it. he let another of our coworkers drive his truck the night before. well in the middle of the pit, the other guy let off the gas..... a little water in the intake and ALOT of water in the dizzy. yeah so we took our stock XJ out there with street tread and tried to help him out. need less to say he had to leave it ANOTHER day because i couldn't get the damn thing to fire either. jeep made it there and back with only ONE dent on the drivers rocker panel. wife looked at me and said no more till we get a lift.

2nd time i went out i was seeing how much flex i had in the 4runner and the front driveline came apart. to top it off my hi-lift (always buy name brand) BROKE trying to fix it. it was a short day. only me and 2 other people but in my yota alone. so nothing major was done.... yes i suck, but i want to do more.
