So it's settled....Reds are over-rated from all the fan-boiz, and SX's are for the real men. DONE

Now, while i'm the dumb stupid bastard running hard as rock regular SX's....all the chatter in this thread makes me think the Red guys are the "civics with fart cans" kinda guys and the SX's are the guys that really wheel their ****. Dunno...just an outsider lookin' in perspective. :)

If you ask me the majority of the guys running sticky SX tires are the ones that show up at the 5 big events a year to see and be seen. Unload off the trailer, break on the nearest/hardest obstacle in 5 minutes time, then go back to camp and get drunk :****: :woot: :flipoff1:

Sounds pretty accurate to me. The SX guys are your video material. The guys who run reds make it look too easy. Wonder why?

I would value Coles opinion, he makes the tires works for the people that makes them, and he has had the 42's and 39's on the same rig, plus I would bet no one has been to more different places and seen as many rigs with every different combo that there is.

Shoot, one of my last sets even has his name on a sticker inside the tires.

Part 2.. Which tire has a longer tread life?

I've seen a ton of red's worn all the way down to slicks and very few SX's if any worn down this far. Is it because the SX has a lot more tread depth to give up or do red's just wear down quicker than the others? I've been wheeling a set of treps since the fall of 2011 and they still have a good amount of tread left. Just wondering if I would have already needed a new set of tires had I been running reds.

I think the only way this could be done, fairly, is to use the same rig, and just change tires/wheels out.

Something like this ^^^^^ was talked about at Mountainside one time... 3-5 similar rigs on all the sticky tires crawling a flat dry slab, followed by them all taking the same line after the slab was soaked would be flashemifyougotem

If I remember correctly the amount of work that would entail is why it never happened before... Tire newness would really mess everything up too

the KORE buggy that I used to have seen all three tires mentioned above:

39 reds
43 SX stickies
42 reds

I would rate them in that order - I'm not a fan of 42 krawlers, they just don't work well

the weight was my biggest complaint on the 43 SX - but overall traction didn't seem as good as the 39 krawler.....but the 43 SX made up for some of that with the extra ground clearance

the extra height that the 43 has made a huge difference with big ledges, ruts, and undercuts....but I still wouldn't trade the extra traction that the 39 reds have

I will run BFG's until someone makes me stop, but I don't think you would be dissapointed with either tire thumb.gif

I was top ten 2 years ago going into the finals. I'm sorry I don't have endless amounts of money to throw at one. If you woulda seen me at rbd you would know I'm almost back! :dblthumb:

Someone asked earlier in this thread. Snapped a decent comparison pic from this weekend. The rig with the Krawlers is mine. Jay (guy with the sticky SXs) and I rode together all day and evening. It was wet and nasty. I always pay attention to how tires hook. I felt like it was pretty even all day with him making some obstacles a little easier than me, and me hooking on some things a little easier at times. Great ride overall.

I say the SX looks like it needs the center treads opened up a bit. Maybe one groover blade with off the front of each center tread block...

You definitely spanked my arse at the AOP ride, but it was not a wore out red label kinda weekend. You got tha horses and big knobbies for sure. Boggers would have been my tire of choice this weekend. Maybe we can get another shoot out at Hale Mtn. in Feb.??? :flipgotcha:

There's a big difference in wore out red labels vs new tread red labels when it's wet and nasty. New tread Red's dig a lot better in the soft stuff than people realize. I run a new set every year so I never really go under 80%.

I agree the centers need to be cut , just not sure what cut would do the best.
