An Fittings?

All right, yes im going to ask it. What the heck is AN, is there some sort of conversion to standard, or am i way off. On my vortec swap im redoing all of the fuel lines. 3/8" supply 5/16 Return, thats whats stock. So now im shopping around for fuel fittings and other fuel related stuff and its seems like everything is Measured in AN. So i guess what im trying to figure out is for my 3/8" supply line im going to need some
Flare fittings, 3/8 NPT 6AN, what the hell does the 6AN mean. I see in jegs for braided fuel lines 6AN 8AN, what is the conversion to 3/8?

Please help, putting way to much thought into this.

AN sizes are in 16ths of a inch. 6AN=6/16"=3/8"
